Evnin'

No thanks to school I have finally finished with the first stage of the Warlords Cocktail Project. I have completed all the dimensions in CAD. It is my hope that anyone will be able to build there own project with the plans I have made up. Every piece of the original cabinet is detailed in the plans. So if someone wants to build a MAME version with an A-PAC then only apply the information you need. There are a few things you will have to acquire but everything is available except the glass underlay. I have a great original that I will be getting scanned. Anyway, this project is long overdue and I have the nasty part done. I will take pictures of each panel and build an assembly log. Is there anyone interested?

A-pac should be perfect. It provides 4 analog axes which is exactly what you need. What type of paddles are you using?

This is great. I've viewed your plans before and am glad to see a working example.

If you are interested, I've got a manual for the upright version for you for free just cover shipping.

Also, are you going to make the scan of available at the Artwork Library? The bezel isn't much but it be nice to archive. Personally, I think the sideart and marquee for the upright is really nice and is often overlooked at how nice it is. That reminds me I need to scan in my marquee.

I use angle iron for a fence too, for a jigsaw, fow a circ saw, and for the router. Seeing your ultra smooth curve I figured there was a 'genius' way of doing them. Ah well, back I go to nibbling

The original formica pic just screams 1979!

You might try sending a pic to one of the manufacturers or formica distributors to see if they can compare it to what's available. There are usually lots more colors finishes available that a cabinet shop will have samples for. You might be able to order a sheet in if they have a better match.

BTW, I would bet that Atari had a tolerance of +/- 1/16" in the manufacturing process. You should make some of your parts slightly different and be sloppy during glue-up, to maintain authenticity

Well my savior has come

Tbombaci is a major contributor to the vector art library and has agreed to vectorize the file. There is even talk of getting full blown screen printing done. Wouldn't that be sweet. I have submitted the file to him and he claims it should be done soon.

Well here is the side template. This will allow me to make two with a laminate bit before I start modifying each individual end.

BTW the vectorization of the glass is complete. It still has to be scaled though. He did a great job.

Actually the cutout holds a piece of smoked plexi which also sits on the tabs of a paper bezel.

well,

to me it sounded like you have a whole original warlords cocktail, so i'd leave that alone, but if you've just made a perfect repro and just have the internals for a warlords, then go ahead and stick it in your perfect clone.

Yes your right I do have an original cab. I bought it cheap off Ebay. The problem is the cab is covered in formica. So its nearly impossible to repair it with out disassembly. When I received it I immediately noticed that someone had tried to break into the coin drawer by standing on it. This splintered the bottom destroying the particle board sides as the staples were ripped out. This included many supports and blocking inside the cab. This is why I took detailed measurements to allow me to fix it up If I decided to disassemble a portion of it for repair. This is my dilemma. I have yet seen an answer to the debate of scratch building a cab in exact dimensions and using all original hardware and electronics with repro artwork to refurbish a cab.

I started this project with this in mind and started having second thought. But I could not bring myself to use particle board.

IMO, definately use the original parts for your repro. Think of it as a restoration, but instead of having to just replace a few damaged panels, you had to replace every damaged panel!

Saving the crapped up SHELL of a game? Waste of time if they covered the whole dang thing in formica. You've saved the innards, you're NOT the person who ruined the rest of the cab. It's stupid to worry about saving material that was used, especially when it's particle board. That's like worrying about restoring one of those crappy video cabinets from Wal-Mart that's all pressboard and the formica is starting to buckle. Not worth the investment.

Now, had cabs been made out of real wood, or if you were able to save the artwork, you'd be talking a different issue, but since neither of these are possible, just stick the guts into your project here. Removing paint, one thing, removing formica, TOTALLY different ballgame.

Look at it like this - you're building a cab from scratch, just like the manufacturer did. The difference is that you're not making any more. You're building a better home for the parts, and keeping a "machine" alive. Or, look at it another way. All the particle board is damaged, you're just making several replacement panels to get it back in good condition.

This is like stupid building codes in WI where you can't build on certain properties, but you can "renovate" the existing structure, and can tear EVERYTHING down, EXCEPT one original wall. Then, the next year after your "renovation", you "realize"

that the old wall is experiencing "problems", so you tear it down and "repair" it.

Personally I think, since you have the skills, that you should duplicate the original as close as possible, even bits that aren't 'needed'. Then move all the parts over, and junk the original cab. That way you are really restoring the cabinet, and it would be original looking even to someone who was familiar with that cabinet. I can't see anyone having a problem with that kind of restoration.

Use the original parts. It's a dedicated machine and that just makes it that much more authentic.

I think the reason Goldmine didn't go into the HOF is because you don't have a website for it. All cabs in the HOF are required to have their own website outside of BYOAC.

One more question

I was able to get the wood grain formica off of the particle board and its probably reuseable but dull from age. Would you guys find a close match and use new formica to match the rest of the new cab or try to use the old.
Each end of the cabinet was slighly differant so I know I wont get a good fit but it can be done.

I made a mistake and had to re-cut the end panels. Can't even read my own drawings. There perfect now. Nice and square with good CP angles. I'm thinking about saving all my original hardware and building an original out of particle board later on. My goal was to build a Mame so others could build one to. Ive changed my mind on the direction of this one. As you can see the measurements are all good on the CAD drawings.

The original cab had many differences in the dimensions of the end panels. In the beginning I could only guess about the "average dimensions" as I trial fit these end panels I found that differant measurements would work better. They are within a 1/16 of the plans but they look and fit a hell of alot better. It also flows properly with the shape of the CP. Anyway Ive finished Panel B front and back.

I will be making these revisions to the plans later.

Sorry for bringing this back. This is the only complete plans I can find. Now that this work fully in raspberry pie I like to attempt a build. I would like to build the top half so I can bring it to friends places and put it on their coffee table to play. Is there a assembly drawing/guide so I can figure out which pieces I need to make/assemble
