Seems like a lot of work and risk to the components, to mount them freely in the cab, rather than just put the whole case in there. Is it just to make it lighter? To reduce the number of fans needed to cool things? Just cause people think it's "cool"?

No more risk than how a dedicated cab is set up. Also, compare the differences in cost if you had to replace a Pac PCB vs a MAME-capable videocard. (and if anyone says it's cheaper for one than the other, I refer you to Stingray's new attitude after re-reading his first post)
I'm gonna be doing it in my project. If you check it out, you'll see that at first, it'll be the ONLY way to set it up, but if I decide to build the pedestal and whatnot, I ain't gonna be sticking all the stuff into a case and moving it. Some standoffs, mebbe a piece of metal bent to hold cards in....in the grand scheme of projects like these, that's really not a lot of work.

Man, I've been staring at your dude falling down the stairs for the past 45 minutes. Please replace that. I'm hooked.

Not now anyway, for two reasons.
1. money
2. didnt play much ball games
and maybe (3)
you dont need to have all controls known (and unknown) to mankind (and aliens), as I saw before, to play your favorites.

Same here. Centipede and .. errr.. bowling games... Golden Tee? I can't even run that on a vertical monitor. And the damn things are EXPENSIVE. Especially the little ones. I was considering adding a small one to the Pac-man control panel, but the only one that would fit nicely was over $200. Glad I didn't though, would never want to hack up an original Pac-man CPO...

Although the mind police at EE are trying their best to divert me from the original course of action, I made some progress (very faint however, I must say).
My FRONTEND is coming along fine, first version will include all three functions I intended for it - PLAY, LOOK and LISTEN.
PLAY - roms from multiple emu's
LOOK - digital photos slide show
LISTEN - MP3 jukebox
This piece of software will be free for any BYOAC member (who will want it...)
Some pictures follow:

I've also temporarily attached the cp+plexi in it's final position for two reasons:
1. See how it looks and feel
2. Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far away someone told me to go with a curved front for my cab. So this temp clamping gave me some insight regarding that front issue.
Still pondering though
BTW, needless to say this is not the final position of the cab, still need to play some pool
