Best FE for configuring Mame?
« on: September 13, 2002, 05:56:35 pm »
There are a lot of good GUI-type FEs araound, but most don't allow many options for setting configs (controller type, resolution, vector settings etc.)  So I'd like to have 2 FEs that access the same Mame files, one for configuration, one for play.  The config FE should be windows based, and offer the greatest access to Mame settings.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Peter!  BTW, I'll probably be using Emulaxian for the "fun" FE, since the 3d arcade is looking so damn cool!  It'll give me more incentive to provide a few models, too...  ;)

Actually I don't know of any that aid in configuration all that well save emuloader, which isn't much to look at imho.

Actually mame32 has almost every option in fe.  Not bad for that... biggest trouble is they rename some items.

But the best for configuring it... "notepad win.ini"  Nothing complicated in it.

Actually, with how complex the ini files in mame have become this is harder than you think.  Since you have have a configuration ini file for each game, and game types.

I have a horizont.ini, vertical.ini (I put those in), vector.ini, rastor.ini, pong.ini, bzone.ini, warlards.ini, and I am trying to put in button#.ini.

Mame 32 us a separate exe, though.  I can't figure out how to get regular Mame to take the configs/ hiscore/ nvram/ etc from Mame 32.  If this is possible, this would be ideal since I've been using Mame 32 for years and I'm very familiar with it.  Maybe I'm missing something?

I will not be editing configs in notepad.  I've never learned this way and am not interested.  I have limited time to play games, let alone set them up...

Gotta finish my cab!  Guests coming tomorrow!  AIIIIEEEE!!  :o

Haven't used MAME32 in years, so not sure this will work:

Assume MAME32 is in C:\MAME32\ and saves hiscores in C:\MAME32\HI\

Can't you open you mame.ini (mamew) or mame.cfg (mamed) file (C:\mame\mame.ini), and set "hiscore_directory  C:\MAME32\HI"

And do the same for .cfg's, .nvram, etc.

Also, I think you can run C:\MAME\mame32.exe and have everything in your MAME directory.

Yes, just adjust your paths to the MAME32 directories. I primarily use MAME32 and have ALL my roms, snaps, etc in there, so for MAME dos version I just changed the paths to point to the mame32 directories for those files...

yadda yadda...

Thanks!  Just finished my 1st Mame party using Mame 32 (with cab 90% done.)  I definitely need to run something more party friendly for my interface, people kept forgetting how to start games, add coins, exit, etc...  Nice to have a room full of 80's geeks to share my hobby with!  ;)
