ms. pacman problems
« on: August 21, 2004, 06:52:35 pm »
not sure if this belongs here or in the Everything Else forum, but if not here could a mod please move it? i'm having a problem w/ ms. pacman. you're supposed to get an extra life every 10000 points, but on my MAME computer it's only giving me an extra life when i reach 10,000 points and not when i reach 20,000 etc. however, on my desktop computer (which has a bigger hd, better cpu, etc) it usuallly work fine, aka it gives me an extra life when i reach 10,000 and when i reach 20,000 etc. is this a problem of not having a big enough hard drive? any input is greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance,
Nefesis

HD size won't make any difference. Is it the exact same ROM on both PC's. Have you tried pausing and tabbing in the game to change the dip switch settings, I think that might work.

There are dip switches for bonus life.  Something like None, 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 or something. Two switches combined on the real game do this, in Mame it should be labeled something like "Bonus".

Cocktail mode simply rotates the screen 180 degrees (flips it upside down) so if running in a real cocktail it would display the screen correctly to the second player when it's their turn, then rotate back when it's player 1's turn again.

Never heard of a pacman (or ms. pacman) version where you get more than one extra life. Maybe you should try one of the bootlegs.

You should never, NEVER pause the game to make your changes.  It causes all kinds of trouble.  Not sure why, but all changes should be made not paused.

Oh, I didn't read the message correctly then.  You are correct. The real game ONLY gives you a bonus at 10,000.  That's it.  You do not get any additional bonuses later.  I have the real board and real roms in a cocktail and know that for a fact.

I skimmed your message too quickly and though you wern't getting them at the low #, only at the high.  My mistake.

Yeah, I have a real Pac-Man machine and you only get 1 bonus, no matter how high the score gets.
Donkey Kong Hi Scores:

1) 169,600
2) 164,300
3) 134,000
4)116,800
5) LOL!

oh ok. i woin't spend all my time trying for another extra life then. peale- thanks for the warning about pausing and tabbing. i do (now did) do it all the time. only bad that happening was i somehow screwed up which key made the config menu showup and had a heck of a time fixing that.
thanks all!
