A comment on my Cocktail Patch:

I think it had a glitche in it that didn't parse everything correctly.

I remember it had a problem with the centipede driver or something, basically, it had a problem on the cocktail switches that ended with a "\"

I think out of all the drivers, 1 or 2 needed "manual" editing to fix the trailing backslash problem.

I'll post a "fixed" version to www.pacmanfan.com soon.
For now, run the cocktail patch, and if you have any problems, I'll be able to help.

SirPoonga:

I've been looking at adding a cocktail flag in the mame.ini file that will default games that have cocktail dips to cocktail.  I might wiat now until .85 comes out to see all of what Aaron Giles have been doing.

since all the cfg files are going xml you should just need to modify the dip settings in those.  That would be much easier.  No compiling needed :)  Just make an app that feeds it listxml and it will modify the cfg xml files.
