In game, bring up the on-screen display (default configured key is [ ` ] (1 left the top row [ 1 ] key).

First thing you should see if volume.

Use up and down to cycle thru the other options,  You should see for example "Overclock CPU0" set to 100%.  Use the right arrow to increase the percentage effectively overclocking of the CPU in mame.  Helps to do the same with other CPU chips that exist.

Interestingly, I am using mame .67.  These options exist in the main mame distribution.  Testing it on Mame32Plus, only the sound based chips show for the exact same games I tested???  Maybe mame32plus is doing it by default?  Maybe not..... anyone know?

Cave:

I'm sure cheats have to be enabled for overclocking, also holding down the shift key to adjust all cpu's at once. Does anyone know how to keep these settings ?

This specific slowdown is actually covered in the mame faq.  How could you miss it?
