Lubricating a Happ trackball...how?
« on: August 11, 2002, 07:24:06 pm »
I know that certain parts of the Happ trackball are supposed to be lubed, but I have no idea what parts, where, and how?  If anyone could decribe this (of course, pics would be nice too!), I would appreciate it.

Also, how often are you supposed to do this?

Thanks again!

Here's a similar thread where I mentioned lubricating the tball bearings.  Hope this helps.

Thanks, OSCAR.  One additional question, if I may:
Quote
A few drops on the dust shield next to the inner & outer race should be sufficient.
Er...where exactly are the dust shield and the inner & outer races?  I'm looking at http://www.happcontrols.com/trackballs/560110e.htm, but I'm not exactly sure.

Here's a couple of pics of some bearings.  These aren't trackball bearings, but they look similar enough to explain.

Trackball bearings are sealed, and the dust shield on the upper one is shown in black.  The lower bearing is an open style bearing.  The inner race is the inner diameter that the shaft goes through and the outer race is the large O.D. of the bearing.  The balls in ball bearings run between the races.

Even though the bearings are "sealed", the oil will seep between the shield and race if you place the drops right there.  Hopefully that explains it a bit better.
