I am assuming we dont talk too much about roms because i cant find much for past posts, i figured i try anyway.

My question is simple enough though, why is it that some roms work and some just dont. Street fighter 2, and nba jam are two examples of roms that dont seem to work. Others just work like a dream. any suggestions would be great.

Thenasty:

there are alot of reason why it don't work.

Questions are:

1. What version are you using ?
2. Did you update your ROMS if using a newer version ?

To make sure your ROMS are ok to the version of MAME your running is to use clrmame pro.
Remember that when uprading to a newer version of MAME, some ROMS will get updated hence that ROM(s) will not work with Newer version untill you get the updated ROMS (or fix it w/clrmame pro).

So my conclusion is, your running a new version of MAME w/older set of ROMS (thats why it worked w/older version of MAME).

chuggy_20:

ok so i just got the newest version of mame v .83.

So if i have the newest set of roms they should work without a hitch right? So i guess the next question is where do i get the updated roms?

I thought i had a firm grasp on this whole mame thing until i tried to update my files, and mame.dk was shut down.

No one will tell you where to get roms on this board....
Read the rules...

The web is flooded with info about roms...

You shouldn't have too much trouble.

SirPeale:

98% of the time, the ROMs themselves don't change, but the names do.  This happens when they update the names of the ROMs more accurately with what they actually are in the game itself.

The other 2% is usually when a ROM is redumped for a better copy, or if the ROM never existed before (some color PROMs are just guessed at)

You would want to use a ROM manager, such as ClrMAME to note and make these changes to sets.
