Found great online Lexan dealer !!
« on: June 06, 2004, 04:00:25 pm »
Ok very happy with the purchase. He cut everything to size and it was much cheaper then home depot. And the once he is selling is even stronger then the once from home depot. Its "GE" brand(thats the name).
You can treat it like wood, cut with jigsaw, etc.
I bought 2 pieces 33"X18" cut to size for $12 each.Shipping was very reasonable too,only $7.

Here is the sellers email address.Found from ebay.

Why does that make me think those sheets 'fell off the truck'?

Na

Those are odd shapes.  He may have bought the scraps from a buisness that specializes in cutting Lexan. Or, he may work in a stereo shop and sell the scraps left over from the installations.

I think all he sells is plastic/lexan so give him the size and he will give you quote.I am not making anything out of this or anything.I am just happy with my purchase as I didnt have to go through cutting the thing and worked great ;D

For example,it will cost you like $30+ just for 1 sheet like this from Home Depot.

This is the material of choice for covering control panels?  How about monitor glass?  I'm still learning the best practices.

I paid $55 for the lexan to cover my control panel, and that was from a local glass business, so this guys prices are dirt cheap.

Lexan is the material of choice to cover you control panel.  I went with cheaper plexi to cover my monitor, figuring it wouldnt get touched as much.  Somehow it still has gotten scratched, so I wish I would have gone with lexan for the monitor as well, though it would have been a lot more expensive.

I contacted this guy on getting
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Lexan is more shatter-resistant than plexi, but plexi is more scratch resistant.

So, why would someone be worried about shattering control panels?  I'd be a lot more worried about scratches.

I guess I'm not understanding why Lexan is more desirable than Plexi.

Did you build a panel with plexi top yet ?
Try it and you will see how it REALLY goes :D

No, I haven't, which is precisely why I'm asking.  The cab I'm about to MAME does have plexi over its current control panel, though.

Yeah thought so...avoid plexi 8)
Plexi is really annoying to work with ya know. You can't cut with jigsaw, gotta drill backward, and chance are that you will end up cracking the piece. For instance, you will get the first 19 holes correctly then the piece will crack when you are about to drill the last hole >:(

Lexan can be had with a scratch-resistant coating on it- it does cost a little bit more, but it's not that much.  I had a local plastics shop cut me some windows for the hardtop on my Jeep, they special ordered some with the scratch-resist on both sides, it's been installed for a little over a year now and still no scratches.  Of course, I don't really do anything that would scratch the windows anyway.. (they're pretty high up ;))

FYI, lexan, being a polycarbonate, is actually bulletproof in the higher thicknesses (they use this stuff on the popemobile), so if you've got friends who get REALLY angry when they lose at games, you might wanna use lexan to cover you monitor  ;D

My oldest tossed her brother out a large window, I swear. I about died. I replaced it with 3/4 in lexan. My work gave it to me. It was to thick for there needs. at least that window is safe. took 6 years for the kids to admit what happend.

plexi might not be easy to work with at first... but it will look a lot better after a years time than lexan will on your control panel.

Everytime a person with a watch slides his hand along the thing,  a ring,  bracelet,  ect... it will start to get cloudy.   Polish will not do much to get scratches out... as they go deeper than the surface.  Even plexi will not polish out a deep scratch easily... but at least it is more resistant to scratching.

Plexi is usually a lot cheaper than lexan as well.

Cutting plexi is just like anything else... it takes time effort and knowledge to work with it and get good results.
