Tron-style trigger joystick: what/where?
« on: July 29, 2002, 12:20:01 am »
The closest Happ match looks to be their "Heavy Duty 8-Way Trigger Joystick" (http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/50997000.htm), but $100+??  Ouch.  Any other good alternatives?

As always....EBAY!!
I picked up a nice Xenophobe joystick from there.  I wanted it for Discs of Tron.  It does have one more button than I needed but still works just fine.

Another option is to use a PC-style Trigger-stick handle with a Happ Super or Competition joystick base.  http://www.oscarcontrols.com/projects/triggerstick.shtml has a write-up on this and http://www.1uparcade.com/projects-trigstick.html has a rotation restriction mod for it.  Also, MAME GTX has a page on hacking a Raider Pro joystick so the trigger-stick was removable at http://www.mamecdroms.netfirms.com/mamegtx/tutorial.htm.

Advantages:  Cost - under $25.00 each!!!,  Will also work well for BattleZone.  Two Sticks could be hacked this way for Assault, Vindicators, Etc.

Disadvantages:  Lacks the solid, heavy feel of the Tron Stick,  not 100% arcade accurate for Tron (doesn't bend forward like a true TRON stick).

Just wanted to throw another option at you!!!

Keep watching www.arcaderenovations.com.  They are in production of 100% accurate translucent blue Tron handles, with logo insert etc.  They are supposed to cost $60 or so.  They may do some Gorf and Satan's Hollow handles as well.  Of course you'll need to hack it to a joystick base...

Before spending time... really look at ebay.  I got one with a trigger and two thumbs for 10 bucks + 10 bucks shipping.
