Do you need to reinstall CRT EMU if you switch GPUs?
« on: November 29, 2019, 09:10:40 pm »
I am upgrading my GPU to one that is compatible with the same version of CRT EMU I use currently. Is it possible to do this without reinstalling CRT EMU and all the mode settings or do I need to uninstall the drivers and start again?

You can switch the card and Windows will probably detect the hardware and apply CRT Emudriver automatically. This highly depends on the availability of other driver versions in your hard drive's driver store that Windows considers more "suitable". Anyway, in any case, your modes will be lost since they're tied to a specific device.

What you want to do is to backup all your modes (VMMaker, settings, video card, export modes). This way you can export all your already adjusted modelines to a text file. Then, once you have the new card up and running, restore the modes in the same way (VMMaker, settings, video card, import modes). Don't forget to press "Install modes" after this.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Thanks.

I think I must have had a whole bunch of other drivers on this PC because when I tried the new card it went from 31khz to 37khz and I lost sync on my monitor. Before that Windows gave an error message warning about a pch violation. The new card is an AMD 5870 which is a dual gpu in one. It doesn't seem to like that. It thinks I somehow connected two different GPUs to the same slot.

Is the best course of action now to go back to the old gpu and remove all the none CRT EMU drivers or will I need to reinstall CRT EMU?
