Thanks!

Do you get the same listing there when the you select the other options in the upper menu "Device:"? E.g. if you pick \\.\DISPLAY21 in there.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

I've just compiled a verbose version of VMMaker, please run it in your system and post the log here, I've attached the executable, just rename the old one and drop this one in the same folder. I just need a copy of its startup log, no need to test anything else.

I really appreciate your collaboration.

EDIT: Just to add the actual complete log we need requires you to enter the Edit Settings tab.

Mine looks like this:

Thanks! Also, just in case, try using the Arcade_15 preset instead of the K7000 one.

One final test for me, please. Could you try enabling EDID emulation with the ARCADE_31 preset?
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Me too  ;)

EDIT: Just need to see if the driver eats the EDID. Of course it won't be valid for 15 kHz so don't even try installing modes.

Thank you.

Last (I swear) if you have a chance, no hurry, pass me a .reg file of this key in your system: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{D39178CA-82E6-11E9-8904-99523214DC8F}\0000

At this point I can say I can't fix it from here. Everything is working as intended except the driver rejects the EDID for some reason. It works here with a newer Vega GPU, so I'm quite sure it's possible to get it working. But I'd need to do kernel debugging on the phyisical machine to figure out the issue. So I think it's time I bite the bullet and get the 2400G so I can play with it here.

Thank you for your time and the information you've provided, it's very valuable to me and to the project. I'm sorry that it didn't work. I can't test all gpus so what I usually do is to have a stock of cards that cover the lower and higher (or older-newer) range of the ones I want to support. So having success with the Vega 56 induced me to think the Vega 8 would work out of the box. I'd like to have checked this months ago but I have very little free time.

Cheers,
Calamity

I will get that reg file to you today.  It appears my only path at this point is to install the Ryzen 1200 (it's at the local distribution point and should be here today) and go from there.

BTW... safe to continue using this VMmaker going forward or should I go back to the "normal" one?

It is safe to use it, it just shows more information in the console.

Thanks for your .reg, everything is setup correctly, it's an issue with the driver itself. I won't manage to figure it out until I get my hands on the hardware.

FWIW since someone else had success,  it may be a MOTHERBOARD issue?   He was using an Asus MB and I have the cheapest Gigabyte money could buy... GIGABYTE GA-A320M-S2H

There was a time when Gigabyte made fantastic motherboards.  I think that time has long passed.  I won't buy anything other than Asus now.

That said, it might be worth doing a side-by-side comparison of the specs on both boards to see if there's a hardware/chipset/component difference between the two boards that we can isolate as the cause for incompatibility.  Then in the future, we could just say that boards designed with "part x" are not compatible.  Though in reality, it might come down to a missing or incorrectly coded feature in the motherboard BIOS that could be fixed in a future update.

Minor issue ... In ATTRACT-MODE even though my desktop is at 640x480i,  when I drop in to attract-mode it does so at 640x480p.... when I exit it goes back to 640x480i.   If I set the resolution to anything else,  it maintains the correct resolution / 15khz.... and of course all my layouts I've made for Attract Mode are at 640x480...

How do I "remove" 640x480p mode or otherwise prevent it from being used?

I've noticed a distinct drop in speed between the VEGA 8 and the R5 220.   For example,  running the Vega 8 with a PC monitor I was dropping below 100% on Gauntlet Dark Legacy only twice during the whole attract mode... now it occasionally goes above 100% sitting around 80-85% most of the time.

This R5 220 is a piece of crap card to be honest... and after a bit of research I ended up picking up a factory reconditioned R7 250 which is a much better card while still retaining the VGA output.  I am HOPING that it's old enough (2013 introduced) that the VGA out will work with little fuss (PLEASE??)... but at $49.00 it was hard to pass (especially since this R5 220 was $39 and is going back).

Any insight on the R7 250?  Will it be as easy as the R5 220?  Will the VGA port work or am I going to have to fuss with HDMI again?

Thanks....

I own a HD 7750 and I just picked up a low profile R7 250 off of Ebay last week.  They're both 1st gen GCN parts (Cape Verde Pro vs Oland XT) and they're almost identical performance-wise from what I've read.  I think the 7750 is supposed to have a few more shader units or something but at the end of the day I don't think it makes much difference.

So far, I've only tested the HD 7750 with CRT_Emudriver 2.0 and it works perfect.  I expect that the R7 250 to be the same.  If I get some time tonight or tomorrow, I'll try to toss it in my MAME PC to see how it works.

EDIT: Here's a comparison of the specs (from wikipedia) between the HD 7750 and the various R7 250 models...

EDIT 2: I found this useful list online that shows how the new card names map to the old names.

  • Radeon R9 290X = Hawai XT = new card
  • Radeon R9 290 = Hawaii PRO = new card
  • Radeon R9 285 = Tonga PRO = new card
  • Radeon R9 280X = Tahiti XT = Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition
  • Radeon R9 280 = Tahiti PRO = Radeon HD 7950 Boost Edition
  • Radeon R9 270X = Curacao XT (Pitcairn XT) = Radeon HD 7870
  • Radeon R9 270 = Curacao PRO (Pitcairn XT) = Radeon HD 7870 reduced clocks
  • Radeon R7 265 = Pitcairn PRO = Radeon HD 7850
  • Radeon R7 260X = Bonaire XTX = Radeon HD 7790
  • Radeon R7 260 = Bonaire = Radeon HD 7790 with reduced configuration
  • Radeon R7 250X = Cape Verde = Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition
  • Radeon R7 250 = Oland XT = new card
  • Radeon R7 240 = Oland PRO = new card

Hmmm... I wonder what version of R7 250 I have... I got this:

https://www.newegg.com/msi-radeon-r7-250-r7-250-2gd3-oc/p/27N-0023-00083?Description=r7%20250&cm_re=r7_250-_-27N-0023-00083-_-Product

It says core clock of 1050 which tells me it's the older model though.... and the fact it has DDR3 confirms the fact.

So yesterday I did my first tests with a Ryzen 5 2400G and I can confirm FrizzleFried's reports.

Well... not in THIS particular case.

The thing is, I was excessively confident about the Vega 11 APU being supported since I had success with my Vega 56. The rule that worked for me in the past was that giving support to a newer card guaranteed support for previous models. What I was wrong about was assuming that Vega 56 (Vega10 XL) was newer than Vega 11, when it's actually the opposite (1 year older). Now I need to figure out why newer models are different so that the EDID emulation code isn't even executed in the driver.
