How thick can I get a vinyl control panel overlay?

I've been working on patching up my dynamo metal control panel so that I can drill new holes. After all the welding and filler and sanding it's not perfect. Can I get some thick vinyl that would go over the metal and perhaps smooth things out? Like 1/8" maybe?
