Thanks firedance - according to the specs though there is no way one of these things would fit in my cab.  The interior width is only 9.5" and I probably only have 5 or 6" of depth to work with because of all the other stuff I have to cram inside.

No real update to report - I have pretty much finalized the art and just need to place the order to have it printed.  With school started and soccer, guitar lessons, flag football, etc. in full swing I haven't had much time to work on this thing.  Once we get into a routine and I can predict my schedule a little better I will get going on this again - I still plan on finishing by Halloween.  Once I apply the art I will actually be just about finished with the build part... just have to drill holes for the CP.

I have been messing with the Raspberry Pi and I've decided to try and create my own image.  I must have flashed my 32GB microSD card 25 times by now LOL.  I can get other people's images up and running but they are all far too bloated with crap for my tastes.  I have also figured out how to put the "stock" Retropie image on there and load up a few ROMs.  Now I just need to figure out how to create a layout, set up one button on/off, disable settings and some other stuff.

Correct - Though many of the SFF ( or USFF ) actually use an external PSU ( like a laptop PSU ) where the PSU is actually an external brick that could actually be placed outside the cabinet or in a different part of the cab with just the power wire running to the MOBO.

Like this dc7900 for $40 shipped ( PSU pic below ) -- https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Compaq-dc7900-Desktop-PC-Ultra-Slim-3-16GHz-2GB-RAM-w-Power-Supply/401518640040?hash=item5d7c603ba8:g:zl4AAOSw6Mxax-zS

No problem, guess the pi is the way forward  :)

yeah, that's true of usually USFF like you've pointed out, looks like that would still be too large for this build, pi is the way to go :)

Instead of creating a theme from scratch, it is much easier to re-skin an existing one.

https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Themes/

For example, "tronkyfran" is the same as "simple", but with different background pictures for the System menu.

The theme files are located in /etc/emulationstation/themes/, but you might have problem directly accesing/altering them due to file/directory permissions.

IIRC, here's the workaround I used:
- Load retropie on one SD and Raspbian (GUI) on another
- Boot to Raspbian GUI with the retropie SD in a USB reader and a thumbdrive with the desired pictures
- Open two file manager windows and go to /media where you'll find the thumb drive and the retropie SD directories
-- Navigate one window to the pictures on the thumb drive (source)
-- Navigate the other window to the theme, system, art directory with the pictures you want to replace (target)
- In the source window, copy the path
- In the target window, pulldown menu Tools -- "Run a command from current window"
-- If the filenames match ==> sudo cp [ctrl-V to paste path]/filename.jpg
-- If the filenames don't match ==> sudo cp [ctrl-V to paste path]/thumbdrive_filename.jpg filename.jpg
