4 player Scud Race on Supermodel emulator
« on: April 29, 2024, 05:04:01 pm »
I wanted to run Scud Race in 4 player mode on dedicated PCs using the supermodel emulator. Since Sega Rally 2 did work quite well I re-used the same setup for Scud Race. The network settings in the .ini worked out for SR2, so I figured they might be good for Scud Race as well. However, there were some problems once the game started. The machines would sync and go ingame but only 2 player-mode would show. Then, 2 machines would start single races and 2 get stuck waiting for other players. Did anybody have success getting all 4 players to run properly?

Hm... how fast are your machines?
As you are running SR2 in 4 player mode your ip/port config should be fine.

Did you setup the cabinet IDs and and match the settings? (like country, cabinet type etc.)
I do all that stuff even without a Joystick ;)

Cabinet IDs are 1-4. Cabinet 1 is configured as master, the other as slave. Country is USA and type is "twin".
I am using 4 identical i5-6500 CPUs (2 machines use different GPUs tough).

The network check is successful on all 4 machines. Ingame it reports "up to 2 players can play" in attract mode.

I also checked the the manual. Interestingly, the wiring diagram for 4 players looks like P1->P3->P4->P2. Do I have to change the Cabinet-ID and .ini IPs acordingly? Since the SR2 diagram looks the same, I guess it should be working, tough.

Probably I just messed up some setting. Is Scud Race known to work in 4 player mode with supermodel? Just wanted to make sure before
investing more time. Thanks!

I was having a play around with it the weekend and I got it running in a single PC 8 player network (although, the 8 games shudder down to about 15fps running in unison on my ancient PC like that).

It sounds to me like you're got an issue with your IP config, but your post is a bit confusing - If the game is only running in 2 player mode, then that means you've got a 2 player ring network, but that wouldn't make sense if the 4 machines are successfully connecting (and you've previously got a 4 player SR2 network). Your ring network in your config ini for the 4 versions of supermodel should look like this:
Code: [Select]
Player 1
Network = true
SimulateNet = true
PortIn = 1970
PortOut = 1971

Player 2
Network = true
SimulateNet = true
PortIn = 1971
PortOut = 1972

Player 3
Network = true
SimulateNet = true
PortIn = 1972
PortOut = 1973

Player 4
Network = true
SimulateNet = true
PortIn = 1973
PortOut = 1970

Yeah, I know, it does not make much sense. Unfortunately it will be a few days until I can spend more time with the issue. Will post .ini files and more detailed game settings then.
Did you ever have it running on dedicated machines?

Yes, but no more than 2 machines - I've linked up my barcade PC running one instance of Supermodel to my main PC running 2 in a 3 player network.

Thank you! Then it is probably just a misconfiguration, will look into it.

Probably. My ring config is p1->p2->p3->p4...->p8->p1. No alternating in any weird order or anything.
