Sound in DOS
andyshan:
Ok! i've got in my mame set up (cabinet/PentIII450/SIS6326/Hantarex9000 monitor) a really crappy soundcard, i'm not sure what it is but i've got drivers for it to work in windows, however i don't think there are DOS drivers for it. :P
So my question is, since my mame set up is going to be in pure DOS, how do i get sound in DOS... do i have to buy an old soundcard with DOS drivers (any old sound card), or will there be any generic files that i can download for my card to work.
(the soundcard isn't a special one btw, it looks like one of those chipsets you would normally get integrated on a motherboard)
Thanks to all who help me! :D

It depends on what flavor of DOS you will be using.
I have two types of Creative sound cards, an SB512 and a SB Live! Value, these cards have DOS drivers available, but the drivers don't work with FreeDOS. They do work with DOS 7.x and ROM-DOS.
Too bad built-in motherboard sound typically doesn't have drivers for DOS. That's what I would use (FIC AZ11E motherboard)
The short answers to your questions are no, and no. :)

I'll be using the DOS that comes with Win98SE. My config will is so that it boots into DOS rather than Windows98.
Will this version of DOS suffice if i say get a Sound Blaster 128 PCI card and just install the DOS drivers for it? :-\

It should work great. Just keep in mind that your CPU will limit what games you can play.

Hmmm.... so my PentIII450 and 512mb of ram will not play most games? where do u think the limit is? (i'm looking for a relevent thread as we speak...)
