High Score Competition #211: Super Dodge Ball (Neo-Geo)

Looked at the sports All Killer list & saw a game about dodge ball. Looked up a gameplay video & here we are - hope it's fun.

High Score Competition rules and scoreboard

Game Name : Super Dodge Ball (Neo-Geo)
ROM Name  = "sdodgeb"
----------------------

Settings: Default - Level 4
Controls
   Joystick: 8-way
   Buttons: 4 [Shoot/Catch|Pass/Dodge|Jump/Jump|Faint/Provoke]




Players choose from one out of seven dodgeball characters: Kunio (the main character in the Kunio-Kun series), Riki (Kunio's rival), Miyuki (a schoolgirl), Sabu (a Yakuza boss), Shinji (a Bosozoku member), Misuzu (a big lady) and Kenji (a street bum). Each character has two generic teammates as well. Players knock each other out with volleyballs until everyone of the opposite team are out.

Last Day: Sunday, February 26th 2017



Quest for the Bronze Joystick! The most successful competitor of each calendar year will possess & display the BYOAC Bronze Joystick Trophy.

AWWWWW YEAH! I never knew they had a neo-geo version of this game!  One of my all time NES favorites!

Starts with two easy teams, and ramps up from there. Can't figure out how to do the special moves. Off to google I go! Haha

Add this to the long list of Neo Geo games that I don't understand. Maybe it's too much like a fighting game.

And I can't believe the huge glaring typo in the title. They spelled "Confusing" D-O-D-G-E. Don't know how that got through Quality Control.

I figured out some tricks to finally get past the 3rd team. I just need to figure out those nifty reversal moves.

So far ime going for the quote from the film dodgeball...

"Remember the 5 D's of dodgeball: Dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge."
The basic special throw is a SF2 Ryu fireball. Down, down/forward, forward + throw.

When power meter is full, and you have the ball, the sequence is:
Forward, followed by a half circle that goes "back, back/down, down, down/forward, forward + throw" for a team special throw.

I can't remember the others.

This game seems to be pretty fun. Was able to get passed the 3rd level & timed out on the 4th I think. I've only been able to do a handful of power throws & have done one team power throw. Need to start trying the power counter because the CPU is killing me pretty easily with it. Also I found this cover at some other forum when I was researching during the selection process. It has the move list on the back - hope it helps.

Ime a little confused coz during the instruction demo at the start it says to hit A&B for a special but that seems to do nout :s

The A+B boost your power bar at the bottom. Press it without the ball & you should see your bar rising.

I haven't gotten past the fourth team. It took me a while to beat the third. I haven't been able to play for the past few days, though.

Ah-ha! Suspicion confirmed. That's why I don't understand this game. It is indeed a fighting game disguised as a dodgeball game!

Got past 3 finally & had one guy left on 4.

Started to figure how to attack the other team better & was able to get the power throws on most throws. Got to level 5.
