Anyone else watch BBQ with Franklin? http://www.pbs.org/food/features/bbq-with-franklin-season-1-episode-1-brisket/ Dunno what it is, but I like that show. Showing someone sitting next to the cooker all night, drinking a beer and pissing around on their phone resonates with me. Much better than those cooking shows where it's just someone dumping premeasured ingredients into a bowl, then showing the final product. My local PBS just started airing Steve Reichlen's back catalog of shows rapid-fire, but I just can't seem to get into them. They all have different names, but use identical formats down to the sets. |

I still don't know how that guy managed to become the face of BBQ but more power to him. Either he or the dude he's got a blood feud with when he stole all the recipes was working at a place in Bryan, TX years ago and word was getting around about this awesome BBQ coming out of this dump on the edge of town. So I ride there once and what was the special.... Fried catfish. Still get a chuckle out of that blown opportunity. This state has gone full retard on "it's not any good if you don't stand in line for an hour" which is a trend I won't indulge. |

Was not aware of a feud. Googled it. Most stories were hard to follow. This song was the best summary I found: http://brisketman.com/the-tale-of-franklin-mueller-lewis/ It seems John Lewis has moved shop to Charleston, SC. I might just have to ride the scooter down there this spring. |

Yeah, that song sums it up pretty well. I think it was cocaine and not booze, though. It's always cocaine. San Antonio had a good place where the cokehead dropped dead and his cokehead brother took it over. Eventually the Chinese people across the street bought it and kept all the cooks. God bless the weird diversity a visit to that place entailed. One of my biggest regrets in my time there was not deigning to eat "strip mall BBQ" until right before I moved. It was $42 for sausage, chicken, brisket, beans, etc and it'd take us a week to eat it. Or you could stupidly pay $15 a plate for something you could finish in 10 minutes. I don't really think a restaurant can turn out good BBQ at a price people are truly willing to pay. |
