While the old ID engines are F/OSS, the actual game content/artwork (models, textures, sounds, music, level maps, etc.) is often not. The idea is that people can make new games using the old engine or can play the old game on their choice of OS using the existing data they have which could also be from the old Shareware version. I don't know for sure, but as far as I know, Quake 3 Arena is like this. The engine is GPL, but the full game is still commercially licensed. Might explain why you're finding the content on unusually skeevy places. |
