Under the yoke? Hmmmm.. sparks usually equals flyback, but under the yoke is odd. Is it loose?

Oh, and I've gotten to the point where I just cap the monitor first before I fire it up. Saves time.

Cap the monitors BEFORE firing it up. When caps are at wrong values due to age and leakage it affects the electronic properties. This can for example increase a frequency somewhere in the circuit causing higher voltages to be generated and thereby blow the damn thing to kingdom come.
