Who much would you insure this build for?
« on: September 08, 2015, 03:38:12 pm »
So the movers are coming tomorrow and I need to give a value for my pedestal. The cost of the insurance is covered by an employer and I don't want to over value.

I think the materials came to north of $350. But with time in, painters, and would carvers I was thinking $600 is a fair value to assign to it. What do you think?
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,134515.0.html

PS: I'm not asking what you would pay for it. Just need a fair valuing for it.

Depends --- How much are they charging per x$ value for the insurance ???

Figure you do not want to put a value less than you would be comfortable with if one of the movers decides he wants to "lose it in transit" - yet if they are charging more for higher values you don't want it to cost too much to move it either -- so really depends on what you would be satisfied getting if they lose or damage it in transit vs. what amount extra the mover will charge to insure it for that value of loss. Figure I'd value it at at least 3-4 times what it would cost in supplies to build a new one - so based on your $350 est. for parts probably $1000 - $1500 (that way if it is lost you can get the parts you want to build a new one and still get some $ for the hassle)

Insurance is cheap and you're playing with company money.  $2,500.

Whatever it would cost replicate it, if someone else did the work.  I would think Monster Arcade would charge a ton.

That carved piece is a work of art.  Time & Money.  Thousand dollars at least.  It may be worthwhile to dismantle it separating the joys, buttons, PCBs.  Did it run on a PC?  I don't recall.

the most accurate thing ive ever read here was when someone said "people ask me how much my arcade would cost to buy, and i tell them 6,000. They laugh because they have zero clue what time and effort it took to build" and i find myself saying that often to everyone who "OMG WANTS ONE HOW MUCH!?!?".. With that being said relevantly, Id go with the guy who said its worth what it would cost to get back. To me it seems rebuilding it is not an option where you are, so take that into account. So value it at how much time and money it would cost to rebuild, plus the fact you dont have access to things you need. Secondly as someone said my main question is how much they charge per dollar on insurance. Im going to guess its a fair fee, and im sure a company would like to tend to not destroy things. ASSUMING fees are FAIR, go with 2-3000. Its the companies money if they lose/break it. And its your peace of mind during the process.... again thats solely based on assuming you wont get killed for 3000 coverage

Jim's right. You could always use eBay and Craigslist pricing to justify asking this much.

Not to mention this build is five times nicer than ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- I see on craigslist and ebay priced like that.

Sadly it's not hard to argue, with the ALZ THE GAMEZ mentality that prevails today.

God forbid someone build a dedicated cabinet these days...  ::)

Thanks guys,

My wife was giving me a hard time when I said $800. I'll show her this post and try to get her to update to at $1200. The time was the biggest this one, over a year.

i took the joys off and the flip switch off the front and they did a god job rapping it.

Her are some pics of her packed up.

Raping it?  make sure you give it a good cleaning it afterwards.  And maybe some therapy.

Still sounds low to me.  Monster arcade charges $1800 BASE PRICE for their pedestal.  Getting something approaching yours is probably in the $2200 range at the least.

Maybe $2000 if she is hassling you.

Yeah, mine would be telling me that I was undervaluing my work. She'd be shooting for closer to 2k.

I lost my first cab in a move, it was covered under full replacement value and I didn't bat an eye at charging 2K - and that was like 7 years ago.  Got it you can build it for cheaper but doi, that's how commerce works.  Only way I would ever see my time reimbursed for the loss is charging that much.
