So I am planning on scratch building a super sprint cabinet. I have acquired an original coin door and steering wheels that I am going to try to use. I will be running it on PC though because locating the original boards etc, and then making them work is a bit beyond me. The only thing I may do is make the screen slightly bigger than the original 19inch. Not sure if I will go CRT or LCD yet it depends on availability/cost here in Aus. Hopefully if I manage to actually make something decent I will get the plans drawn up and share them with the community.

The first problem I want to resolve is the pedals. I believe the super sprint pedals were potentiometer based, and so I was thinking of going with the Happ pedals http://na.suzohapp.com/all_catalogs/driving_controls/50-8194-02. My main question is what do I need to interface those to a PC/Mame setup? I haven't done anything with potentiometers before. After that I will need to figure out a reliable way to interface the original steering wheels with a spinner of some description but that should be a solvable problem.

Is there any info out there that might guide me on how to implement and wire up the potentiometer?

You'll need an analog encoder for the potentiometers.

Wiring them is easy -- pots have three tabs and act as a voltage divider.

The middle tab (2) is called the "wiper".  (middle left piece)

It provides a voltage based on which direction the shaft is turned.

The other two (1, 3) are ground and 5v, connected by a resistive element. (the black 215 degree arc)

As you turn the shaft, the bump on the right of the wiper slides along the resistive element -- closer to ground = lower voltage, closer to 5v = higher voltage.

If the axis is moving in the opposite direction desired, swap the ground and 5v wires on that pot.

Thanks, exactly the info I was looking for!

I will order the pedals and start restoring the coin door. And the ongoing search for cabinet measurements will continue hehe

You link takes me to glass cleaner. :)

It sucks that no one is making the replacement Atari pedals anymore. I don't know which pedals you are thinking about getting, but Happ doesn't really make any the are like the Atari ones anymore. They do have the Kit Style Pedal, but it's a micro switch not a potentiometer and I don't think it is easily adaptable to use a potentiometer.

It took me a long time to track down some pedals for my build. So, depending on how long you are willing to wait and how authentic you want your build, I'd suggest waiting until something comes up on "the bay" or try the Buy/Sell section on several arcade forums.

There are some other pedals from IL (Industrias Lorenzo) that may or may not be of interest. If so, you might be able to get someone to order them for you in Aus. Here is a link to the pedal I'm talking about: http://www.arcadeshop.de/Pedals-Steering-Built-in-Pedal-short-pot_665.html

I love me some Championship/Super Sprint! So, good luck with the build and let us know how it goes!

Looks like the full stop at the end of the link was making it go to the glass cleaner, I fixed it so it goes to the modular pedal now :) I think it looks close functionally and size-wise to the pedals I see in the manual.

But you are right, I am not in a huge rush I might wait a while and see if any used pedals turn up, I can always work on other parts of the construction first

I see there are some on the bay now, but they are microswitch based. Not sure if it would be possible to convert them to potentiometer or not. Might cost me a second mortgage to get them shipped too haha  :)

If Happ shipping cost is a concern, Divemaster carries them, too.    ;D

It probably won't make a difference, but it's actually backwards from the Sprint pedals.

Cool thanks for that, I'll check those out too
If you decide to order from Divemaster, make sure he has the item(s) before you order. I made that mistake once..

Can anyone provide me any advice on understanding what coin mechs I can use with this coin door I am using for the project :

I haven't done anything with coin mechs before so I am flying blind at the moment. It needs to support the push to reject functionality that these machines had and if possible, I'd like to get something that is adjustable/programmable so I can use Australian coins, but if that's too hard I can compromise.

I would definitely go with a larger monitor. Since you are using a computer, you don't even have to find a med res monitor, which makes it a lot easier.

I just bought a SS that had been converted to a 25" monitor, and I really like it. I need to have a new bezel made to fit it since the original is hacked, but the screen size is great.
