Control Panel ideas
« on: June 18, 2015, 11:39:48 am »
Hey Everyone. I have been reading this forum for a while now and I recently bought a new cabinet and have begun stripping out the TV and old control panel (see link below)

My question is, does anyone have any suggestions of getting a 4-player control panel to work with this cabinet?

I know this is kind of a broad question but I was wondering if anyone had any grand ideas as to what I should do. I have been playing around with some plans in my head but I feel I need to see it by mocking up some cardboard layouts.

Here is my Control Panel Layout Plan.

it is 40" W x 12" H.

I'd recommend straightening your player 3 & 4 joysticks like this:

Hello and welcome to the forums.

As already said, I would fix those player 3 & 4 sticks so that they are not angled.
You want up to be up just like player 1 & 2. If you wanna read more on that, just search the forum. It has been discussed to death (and then on some more)

That's a nice looking cabinet. Looks like it'll make a great Mame machine.

In order to do your 4-player panel, you would build the whole control panel as its own box (remember to slightly angle the top panel down toward the player) and notch out the front area of the cabinet like a shelf in order to mount the control panel on it.
You can add some 2x4 pieces in the shelf and screw the panel to that.

I've attached a pic of a TMNT cab (not mine) to give you an idea of how the cabinet looks without the control panel so you get a better idea.

pyract, mgb thank you for your responses. I'll be going in and re-designing the control panel to make players 3 & 4 the same angle.

I would have ideally had a TMNT cab but I found this one on Craigslist for $50 and had to get it.

The sides where the control panel was have a slope to them. I'm thinking of just converting that slope to a right angle so the control panel and box sit nicely on it.

Thanks again for your responses!

I'd recommend straightening your player 3 & 4 joysticks like this:

Why have the joystick on the right angled instead of straight forward? You can forget about playing Smash TV on there.

I think he just kept the right one angled to show the incorrect way to do it. You would want them all straight ahead like players 3, 1 and 2.

As stated above me, the far right is colored red to show that's the non-preferred way, as opposed to the green ones.

I cut off some of the side panels.

This weekend I am taking the Jigsaw to it this weekend and making more of a "right angle" for the CP to sit in.

Also, here is the updated CP design.

Thanks!
