Dangz.  Thats sharp.  The shower looks readily accesible also.

I'll tell you one thing I did get today - this bad ass JAMMA harness from Twisted Quarter that is a definite upgrade to the $10 cheapie you can find online. Less than $20 shipped. The wires are bundled and labeled for conveneince. No quick connect ends, but I'm using it in my Ms. Pac-Man and the controls and coin door already have the wiring and Amp connectors. I'll join the wire ends to the Amp connectors that I have, so I don't need any QD ends (and the few I do need, I have already).

Oh, forgot to add - the wires on that harness are all crimped to the JAMMA pins instead of soldered, and each of the the power lines and grounds are separate wires instead of being soldered together and just running one. Also, the power lines are all the correct guage. I'll be buying this one for my own projects from now on (I'll still get the cheapies as a source of scrap wire, tho).

Maybe it's my big banana hands, but faucets like that guarantee the wall behind the sink is getting wet.

It's my 12 year old daughter's bathroom, so we don't have to worry about big banana hands. However, I am planning on sealing and caulking the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of the back in a tasteful manner to avoid such a thing.

Since the last post....

My bathroom currently.....

Has no door, no electric except for the exhuast fan that stopped working this morning(again), a hole in the floor where the heat register came through, bare subfloor where a closet used to be, and a nasty looking mustard yellow ceiling that was previously covered up by tiles.  The holes in the ceiling are patched with housewrap tape at the moment.

There is a window in the shower who apparently nobody before me thought to put a shower curtain over.
When I first moved in as a renter, there were mushrooms growing on (in?) the window frame.
Not just fungus, full blown mushrooms with stems and caps!  The window frame was mush, so I removed it and replaced it with PVC "wood".
That's all I did because it was a rental that I didn't own.  Just sealed it up for someone else to deal with later.
Not looking forward to opening up that wall.

Going to be a total gut job, including subfloor and ceiling.
I'll buy you two cases of beer, but we have to work fast since it's the only bathroom in the house.

I have to do the same thing with the window in my main bathroom. In my case, it's a cast iron frame that's rusted, so I'll probably need to cut it out with my angle grinder, reframe it, and put in a new window.

And I would totally help if you lived here! I remodeled our main bathroom back in November, but at least I have two other bathrooms.

I plan to have a very experienced tile guy do the shower walls just to make sure there aren't any issues.  I also want him to pick out the new window rather than hear "this other window would have worked much better".

At this point I'm ready to just take out a loan and pay someone to do the whole bathroom.  What holds me back are the quirks and custom built ins that I want, but don't want to pay someone else to take the time to work through.  It's a standard cookie cutter 5x8(maybe 9) bathroom.  I'm ditching a closet so I can move the vanity away from its current spot across from the toilet.  To make up for the loss of storage, I'm doing in-wall storage behind the door.  I've figured out that I only need 3 3/4" depth for big shampoo bottles, etc.
The wall behind the toilet is 6" deep for no apparent reason, so doing a recess there with shelves to hold towels.  Something like the attached pic, but the shelves will extend out over the toilet a few inches.  Of course, the galvanized vent for the plumbing needs moved.....

I'll think about it when I get to it.  Working on final prep to paint the living room and hallway at the moment.
Hoping to go full chuff on Friday; painting and hanging light fixtures.

I like those inset shelves. Those are tight.

Anyone here use a Wi-Fi thermostat? I'm thinking about getting a Nest for my house and wanted some feedback.

Anyone here use a Wi-Fi thermostat? I'm thinking about getting a Nest for my house and wanted some feedback.

Not using a Wi-Fi one, but discovered that allowing the temp of your house to fluctuate too much can cause a lot more "settling noises" at night.
While researching my own structural issues I came across a blog post where someone tried for 2 years to eliminate the crackling noises their house was making at night.
3 different structural engineers found nothing.  Redoing the drywall helped, but didn't eliminate it.  Their fancy thermostat quit working so they threw the old one back in temporarily.
The house stopped making noises.

I experienced the same thing with a weekly timer type thermostat.  I still use it, just don't let the house get as cold.

I was looking at the "Z-Wave" compatible stuff for the remodel, but decided I'd rather have simple things that don't require any time spent configuring and are simple to fix when they stop working.

EDIT: I can see myself losing weeks of my life configuring this: http://www.amazon.com/Mi-Casa-Verde-VeraLite-Controller/dp/B007005364/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1435852434&sr=8-2&keywords=home+controller
..... but that's the way I'd go.

I have that z-wave controller and it is pretty darn easy to set up and maintain.  There are TONS of apps for the phone to control it, or you can use theirs which works just fine.

The fiddling comes in when you start to add more and more stuff, and want to start creating "scenes" or start making complex tasks, like tying a keypad doorlock to your thermostat so when you come home the t-stat turns up.. or having motion sensors that trigger different lighting depending on the time of day.  Plus z-wave is awesome if you have the range, but if it is more than about 40 feet away with a wall or two in between, it gets hit or miss.  Then you end up putting devices in between to increase the range (most devices also are repeaters) that don't really do anything, lol.

Yeah that's always been my sentiment.  Mind you controlling your lights and such with your phone or a remote seems cool..... but then we have these things called "switches" that seem to be located conveniently right where a person would want to control a device.  An automated system means you have to either walk to the remote/phone or keep your remote/phone on your person at all times..... neither of which seems convenient.  Also most of these systems aren't compatible with most appliances like you want them to be.  If you turn a lamp off at the switch then you can no longer control it, ect....

It's almost as if people have had electricity awhile and figured out idiot proof and convenient ways to interact with it...

But then again, I'm one of those guys that's thrown away a programmable coffee maker because I want one I can turn on and forget to turn off by myself.  I'd rather risk an unlikely kitchen fire rather than the possibility of cold coffee.

Yup, and add to that the added complexity of troubleshooting when something stops working.

I also hate it when you walk into someone's bathroom and there are five ---smurfing--- switches on the wall.
It's a ---gosh-darn--- bathroom, not the bridge of a starship.
It always takes me until the last couple switches to figure out which are the fan and the one light I want on.

Does anyone else always reverse the direction of someone's toilet paper when you use their bathroom?

No...?  :D

bastard! .....unless you are correcting it to the "overhand" position.

My boss is always flipping them around backwards because he read somewhere it makes people use less.
I flip them back around even if I'm not using any toilet paper.
Just one of our many passive aggressive dysfunctional games.

Yeah that's always been my sentiment.  Mind you controlling your lights and such with your phone or a remote seems cool..... but then we have these things called "wives" that seem to be located conveniently right where a person would want to control a device.

Since we're talking about bathrooms and such...

Before.

After. Yay!

Nope, not correcting.  Just flipping regardless of its original state.

My boss is always flipping them around backwards because he read somewhere it makes people use less.

because if you are clean, you are less productive. Also the aggressive inflation of toilet paper pricing is causing many small to mid size companies to go belly up. Tell your boss some random guy on the internet doesn't like him.

I seem to recall the direction of toilet paper being one of the most heated "Dear Abby" subjects BITD.

that's quite an impression transformation.  That curved bathtub is really cool.

I don't get that one.  You walk into a bathroom and regardless of what you are doing the correct amount of lights you want is "ALL" and the fan should be on because it's a bathroom and even if you aren't pooping they are stuffy as hell.  So wire it all up to one switch and be done with it.

I would complain about the toilet paper one as well, but honestly tp rolls are so huge now I haven't threaded one on a roll in years.... not a fan of having something that's going to end up on my butthole rubbing against the dirty bathroom wall.

Well I mentioned poop and buttholes in one reply, my work here is done.  (Bathroom looks great wp24)

Thanks. Was the biggest bathtub I could get without jets and the other crap. Took 3 days, the floor is really thick vinyl. Looks good but isn't cold like tile. The only thing I kept was the big movie star lights along the top of the mirror, but I installed them myself a few years ago so I guess it's all redone. The last thing I want to do is get a new main light fixture, I found one that's a frosted glass boat and the lights are inside. But I can never seem to have an extra $200 dedicated to a novelty light fixture...

I like the way you did the woodwork around the window with the little extender to the ceiling.  That is a neat touch.
