Gauntlet Mame - Where I ignore my own advice.
« on: July 18, 2013, 04:27:35 pm »
I always say "Don't use left handed joysticks, don't build a 4 player cabinet and if you do the for god's sake make sure it has 4 buttons per player".

Here is where I ignore all that and build up a 4 player cabinet with 3 buttons per player on lefty joysticks.

Of course there are 22 other cabinets in the room with this one, so no one is stuck playing on it full time.

It was a working Hangtime conversion. I was originally going to just polish it up as Hangtime, but once I got into it I found out it had a whole bunch of problems (wired by a lunatic with no isolation transformer, had a bad rom on the board, a lot of the controls didn't work, etc). So I opted to try to bring it to something closer to what it originally was.

Gauntlet boards and wiring are pretty expensive, so I am going to go the mame route, went with Wicos over Atari logo sticks for the same reason. For simplicities sake I kept the original lefty gauntlet layout with 3 buttons that was already installed. Changing it to a 4 player right handed layout would require re-fabricating the entire control panel and it would be tough to get a diamond shaped button layout within the bounds of the existing player control areas.

Coin doors have been restored, but they aren't going back on until I repaint the front. I have a new front graphic as well.

Right now Merlin has the wrong color buttons for the scheme I decided on and the Valkyrie has the wrong color joystick handle.

Great looking start.

Why four buttons per person in general? Other than the D&D games what else needs four instead of three?

I'm certain the only four player, four button games were the Dungeons and Dragons ones.
I haven't played them, but my guess would be that the 4th button isn't used often, so you could get away with using a combo in MAME for it.

The 4th button is indeed for the D&D ones which are among my favorite 4 player titles.

Coin doors rebuilt and installed. Front art installed.

What do you guys think, leave the old black t-molding or get a dark blue?

IMO -- hey, it's a break-the-rules cabinet -- add some color :-)

Yep, I am considering some custom sideart, I cannot will not with a fox, cannot will not in a box afford Gauntlet sideart. However my wife can run off custom sideart at work, just not wide enough for a full cab.

Other than your button layout being a bit screwy IMO I think its great.  Nice to see you breaking some of your own "commandments" for a change.

Oh and just to be clear, my comment was just meant as a vote for the dark blue t-molding.  Although custom side art does sound cool!

I managed to find a Gauntlet 2 board for it. Now I have to decide between that and Mame and I have had no time to work on it.

My Gauntlet conversion was a Total Carnage.  I upgraded it with a 2-in-1 Jamma switcher and added a Smash TV PCB.  It works great, but now you have me thinking I should convert it back to Gauntlet 1 & 2.   :banghead:

Good work so far.  I love the Wico Joystick idea.  As a previous owner of another genuine Gauntlet machine, I can attest that the original Atari joysticks are a pain to find (and maintain for that matter).

Now you've got me thinking....

I personally never thought too highly of the atari Joysticks either. They are bulky and they fatigue easy. I do like the imprinted Atari logo, but that is about it. I have like 6 of them lying around, and would happily go to wicos if I ever build/refurb a gauntlet.

So I am getting ready to restore mine ... same boat as you paige, no time ... lol been sitting in the corner of my garage as I was remodeling the basement into a game room.  Anyway I was in hopes that you would be willing to part with that Gauntlet 2 board or did you decide to use it? After doing more digging my is actually a Gauntlet 2 so that would be right up my ally so to speak.

Les,

My CP pictured above is for sale if you are interested (I made a new one for Total Carnage).  It has all the original Gauntlet button holes intact underneath. You just need to change the overlay. It may be less work for you since you need to get a new overlay anyway.   Feel free to PM me if you are interested.

Gauntlet is one of my holy grails (beside Spyhunter) and some day Ill probably just build a replica (as I did with the Hyper olympic coctail cabinet). One of the hurdles to overcome is to get some good scans of the sideart. I know there are some out there to buy, but none seems interested in shipping to Sweden at all or to a reasonable cost... :(

I gave mine up some months back. I couldn't make the shape of the cabinet fit in well with the gameroom. It wanted to take up 4 game's worth of space.
