Cleaning/lubricating potentiometers
« on: April 01, 2015, 12:01:56 pm »
Hi Guys, I'm after a bit of advice on cleaning/lubricating sliding potentiometers, It's not off my arcade machine it's off my technics 1210 turntable (pitch control) but I've had some good advice on here so just thought I'd ask. It seems to be a logarithmic 20k sliding pot with 4 tracks, I think one is carbon. what is the best method of cleaning and then lubricating the tracks? there are 2 pads in the center of 2 of the tracks that switch on an led at 0%pitch but the pads are oxidized and are not making a connection.

I know in the us there is a product called deoxit but there seems to be loads of different types which one would I use  and I'm not sure if it's available here in the uk. what would be a good generic cleaner Isopropyl alcohol? and also a good lubricant that wont interfere with the pitch resistance?

Thanks in advance,
Chris.

I use "Nu-Trol" made by MG Chemicals in Canada:

It's a special formula made for cleaning AND lubricating volume controls of all types.

Perfect timing, that's a project that's going to finish sooner than later.

Thanks a bunch for saving me a search Ken

I've been using Nu-Trol for many years and I love it.

In a pinch, you can use Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the control, but it will not lubricate it. The alcohol is perfectly safe.

I have seen people use WD-40 on volume controls, but I do NOT recommend it as the chemicals eat away at the carbon inside the control.
