Playing around with a winbook

OK, educate me please. Why shouldn't we be running newer/current versions of mame?  Is there some set points where things changed a lot, or a place that lists those with some consensus?  Although I haven't look for any such thing I have not also run across it in my reading.
Vigo:
There are a number of things that came about, but the big thing is that some sound issues that were hacked together in earlier mames were "fixed", (aka they were properly emulated, but at the expense of a LOT of CPU usage). I am told that features like HLSL also take a tap on resources, even if not used. I can't confirm that with any evidence though. Other things have been a turn off, such as the flooding of mame with mechanical fruit machine stuff that serves no purpose to gamers. I have been recommended to go with mame 0.106 as a good version to stop at.

Please note that my mame version is 0.103, not 0.137 as I stated earlier. (post above has been fixed.)
Ok, just tested Mspacmanb, mspacman, and btime and I have sound problems on all three, however mspacmanb is not near as bad as mspacman and btime. (I think I was testing btime2 earlier and didn't notice any sound problems then, but didn't test it today.)
Im thinking there may be sound problems with all the roms, just the ones without several different sounds playing at once is not as noticeable.

I set the mamepp cfg file line "Audio Latency =1 " to "Audio Latency= 0" but it didn't help much, if any at all.
I guess i need to look into the winbooks audio settings for a possible fix.
Perhaps we need a different version of mame. I intend to test the 0.147 again to see if it has sound problems.

Thanks Man: It's nice to know it's not just me. Ms.Pac man it my favorite classic game and I was bummed it did not work right.

Does any one know the last versions of MAME before Mrs.Pac Man was fixed?
BorgDog:
One thing I have learned is be sure to turn off the hot keys in the intel graphics options for rotating the display  :banghead:

Some combination of button presses in my setup (i believe it defaults to ctrl-alt-arrow) switched the orientation in the middle of the game and all hell broke lose.  trying to get my autorotating monitor back in sync with windows orientation in sync with mala orientation was kinda confusing, but all is well now.

I'm also having issues getting my buttons to wake the tablet from sleep.  seems the wireless keyboard does it fine, but the minimus avr setup with KADE loader doesn't always want to.  Which also led me to discover that even things like power options in this version of windows are stripped down and the option for turning off USB selective suspend (which theoretically would fix this issue) does not exist.

Also have run into a couple of audio glitches while playing games, may have to do as Vigo suggests and try out an older version of mame, currently running .156 I believe.
HanoiBoi:
Just to add, I've got .112 on my Winbook and tested about 10  games without issue; Donkey Kong, Ms Pac Man, Popeye, Pooyan, Hopper Robo (current competition game), and a couple other similar.
