SEGA Amusement CEO says Outrun 3 is ‘on our radar’

A friend on Facebook has drawn this to my attention.

I'm not exactly sure what not on plan, but on our radar is supposed to mean, but it sounds like something that could potentially be a cause for excitement amongst Outrun fans.

I'm not going to hold my breath.  Another Outrun game would probably require the Ferrari license again, and I believe forza/gt/random sim #322 might have the Ferrari rights tied up.  Even if they didn't Sega probably isn't in a financial situation to purchase the license.

Yeah, the association of Ferrari cars with Outrun is an interesting dilemma. They could get around the problem by just making non-licensed cars that look a bit Ferrari-ish, but would it still feel like a true Outrun game without them? I'd personally be happy with that, as long as the game played well and in a similar style to Outrun 2 and kept the whole Sega 'blue skies' vibe with the same visual and audio aesthetic. And at least that way we'd be more likely to see a home port.

I agree, but the problem about not having the cars is that it might devolve into something like outrunners, which, while fun, isn't anything like outrun.

It might be nice to have a variety of sports cars. I've always said that crusin' usa was the outrun that sega didn't make.

Eh.  IMO  "On our radar" = someone in the company mentioned it as a possibility, but nobody has done anything toward making it happen and we don't have any immediate plans for it.

Wasn't Out Run a high earner in arcades for like a decade?  Wouldn't surprise me if they try to tap that well again.  Couldn't care less about a Ferrari license (I alwys thought it was a Mustang until like 2005).
