Eurocade 2014 Retro Game Experience
« on: September 11, 2014, 06:06:02 am »
I thought I'd start a post for all the pictures and video of Eurocade (September 12-14 in Hilversum, The Netherlands).

The event is hosted at "Beeld en Geluid".

Quote
Sound and Vision (‘Beeld en Geluid’) has one of the largest audiovisual archives in Europe. The institute manages over 70 percent of the Dutch audiovisual heritage. The collection contains more than 750.000 hours of television, radio, music and film from the beginning in 1898 until today.

A team of people (employees and volunteers) are currently preparing for the show. Most (if not all) of the cabinets are privately owned.

Looks great!  Does this happen at the same time every year?  I'd love to plan ahead and make a trip there in the future!

This is the second time in this location. Last year it was around the same time, not sure about next year. Keep an eye on this board

At the risk of sounding like Mark from Classic Game Room, "Nice, they have Vectrex!!!"

Thanks for posting these pictures.  That looks like an awesome event.  Will there be a live video feed?  I can't read all the links on the website.

What is that amazing looking cabinet on the right that looks like an Asteroids Deluxe?   ;D

There is a place in Rochester, NY called the Strong Museum.
They have a classic Games exhibit.
I'm taking the kids there next week but plan on playing some classics myself.

I've never been there but it seems like a scaled down permanent version of the Eurocade.

Here is their list of cabs.

They also have consoles according to their website.

Some more photo's of Eurocade 2014.

At the entrance a Computer Space cab was on display (it was functioning but behind a barrier).
I was also surprised how nice the mirror display looked on the Space Invader cabinet. There was a sense of depth with the scenary graphics combined with the computer display mirrored on it.
There was a nice selection of games to play and the way the room was lit made me remember the arcades I went to as a kid in the 80s.
Also a nice selection of game related collectibles (as from Sjaak's photo's: a lot of Nintendo items before they started computergames) but also a few displays with Lucasfilm related stuff such as Rescue on Fractalus tapes, manuals and gameboxes, Lucasfilm Starwars games and all point-and-click adventures.
Furthermore a bunch of classic computers all available for play.

oh, and the Japanese tableflipping game is by far the weirdest arcade game I have ever played. First slap the tabletop to get the people's attention, then flip the table trying to hit as much other furniture, people and objects (in Burnout Crashmode style).

I also went to the Eurocade 2014 today with my 7 year old son :applaud: As he is somewhat of a Mario addict, he mostly wanted to play Mario games on the various consoles that were hooked up to projectors. He did try most of the arcade games, but in general he was to short to be able to clearly see the screen. I had the opposite problem, as I felt most games were made for midgets ;) I really enjoyed trying out all the various arcade games. Some highlights for me where: playing star wars with a yoke for the first time ever, having fun with 3p Bishi Bashi, 4p dariusburst on a massive 32:9 dual widescreen, playing pac man with a proper stick (instead of the JLW).
I also played Sjaak's Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime Arcade Cabinet :applaud:

Here are some random pics.

I got to agree, while the game was brutally hard most of the time, the experience in a sitdown cabinet with bass-rumblers in the seats was amazing!

Yeah you could literally feel a boss approaching ;D Too bad the cab stopped working late in the afternoon. Would have liked to have another go that was not on the final level and against the final boss.
