Artwork for my little girls arcade
« on: July 24, 2014, 07:12:46 am »
Hi guys, I'm gonna build a 2/3 scale nintendo replica cab for my little girls birthday in september, I was going to do donkey kong or  mario bros, but my wife wants something more personal. I don't want a bunch of artwork on the cab just maybe a nintendo style design on the sides. I'm not that great with design and I wondered if you guys might have an idea that might help me out.The cabinet is going to be teal in color with pink controls and t-molding. I want the marquee to say " Jacie's Arcade. This will really mean a lot to her, because she wants her own arcade that she can play, kinda like dad. She will be 6 years old. I would appreciate any ideas.

Do the DK art but flip roles for Pauline and Mario then install the Pauline DK rom.

Something like this?

I was totally winging the shade of pink and teal.  I have the PSD where I made each letter if you want it, or want it tweaked.

She wants like a  teal color. That wouldn't be  my fav. I guess teal and pink wouldn't look too bad.

Save the teal for the vinyl, keep it as the highlight color.  Use white as the base with pink as the compliment.  White cab, pink t-molding, teal and pink CPO, bezel, marquee, side art, pink and white controls.  Don't leave design desicions solely to adorable 6 year olds or it will be covered in chocolate and glitter.

For added pimp-a-tude buy white plastic everything then dye it all together to the same shade of pink, then take a sample of that to the paint store/hobby store and have them scan it and give you a pantone color code and use that in the graphics then have it match printed at a sign maker.  If it is worth doing...

Actually Malinko I like the marquee that is teal and pink, the first one you did. I may do it like Lechuck said do the cab in white and trim it in teal and pink.

Well I like the idea of Pauline being the hero, so I just recolored the last one:

There IS artifacting from the JPG compression, but you get the gist.

Here's a quick recolor of the Bezel (also with Pauline as the hero instead of Mario) - I had made one for the pauline edition running on my machine to be used as the Mame Artwork was using Pink and Orange so just recolored it with the teal and pink instead.

you have some not quite deleted text next to the "C 1981 Nintendo of America Inc." , you also missed some line recolors near every edited character. (orange near the love DK's arm , red between pauline's arm and dress on all 3 paulines, yellow near nose picking DK, and red near "double farting" DK's left leg. There also seem sto be a lot of artifacting, while thats not a problem for a MAME bezel, its something to consider for a print.

I do like the over all look, and looks like I was close on my colors :)

I used the colors from yours when changing it so they should match -- was doing it quickly so missed some of the recolor (noticed after posting) -- can clean it up if he wants to use it (this was just a quick edit to show the concept) Only used the quick selection tool to select the colors to change rather than zooming in and cleaning up since I wasn't sure if he's want it or not (also figured he might want the pink and teal locations switched.

This is what I had been using -

Had to go back and clean it up some after you mentioned it - This one should be much better ( Used the color selection tool with contiguous turned off so it selected all of the color then just deselected the unwanted areas of that color with contiguous back on so should make for much better selection rather than using the selection tool with contiguous on the first time and selecting all of the areas (which makes missing some easy !!

Forgot to post the larger version of the Instruction bezel that was changed for Pauline also  :

EDIT : Was bored so also recolored a copy of the sideart I had It had to be changed to 150ppi for this forum but will post a copy of all 3 in a zip to my dropbox and add a link in a minute.

EDIT 2 : OK here is the dropbox link with fullsize png versions ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/uwc3kp93iqg5kci/Pauline%20art.zip ) It's about 5MB for the 3 images - sideart is 8.5x11 @300PPI since I was planning on printing it at home so you might need to resize depending on what size bartop you are building.

On topic but off topic last night I tried to do the Pauline rom build, followed the directions, but couldn't get it to work.  Checked the DKong rom was working in .144(I think) first, worked fine, unzipped it, ran the change, rezipped it with 7zip back to DKong and nada - missing chd error in MAME.

Anybody got any tips on which rom version I need to be using (if that's the issue)?  Also, Jaharr, you get yours running yet?

I'm using 0.149 and Mameui on win 7 64 bit and have it setup and working but it replaces my original DK set1 rom ( and had to add the original files that the Pauline edition changed to the rest of the rom sets zip files so they didn't change also - so use set 2 if I want the original ) since Mameui doesn't support the pauline rom name. It does give the Checksum error but you just hit OK (or spin the joystick) like the other rom Nag screens and launches and runs fine.

Here's a short vid of it running - ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUewMW-sGCM&feature=youtu.be ) As you can see I get the warning but it launches fine -- It did take a couple tries using the tutorial IIRC - If you can't get ti going PM me and I'll send you a copy of the files I have if you want.

They have Pauline side art where DK is carrying Mario and Pauline is chasing DK.

Ahh man I forgot the one I had wasn't changed and only changed the color scheme -- I'll see about changing them and reupload tonight.

OK -- FIxed the sideart so that pauline is chasing and mario is held by DK

Here's a new Dropbox link to the set with the fixed sideart ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/uwc3kp93iqg5kci/Pauline%20art.zip ) Let me know if you need any adjustments.

LOL - Yeah it is a pretty messed up  pic of her but was the one that had been used (searched for some others but changing it for the side art would mean it no longer matched the Bezel etc. and most of the others that come up in Google are topless edits which wouldn't be too good for a 6 year olds cab ! ) - I had already fixed her a bit to get rid of the awkward posture she has in the one they are selling but missed fixing the face !

most people flip mario to face the other way in DK's paw, and they cut the foot and put it it above the paw for an illusion of "depth"

You going to keep "Donkey Kong" on the sides, or change it to match the Marquee?

Where had you been ?? That's another good idea SO here is another new version and Link to fullsize on Dropbox ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/y9qxfp8dvb052j7/JacieSideart.zip )

Also has teal version or pink for the background around Jacie's Arcade text.

OK Figure we went through several versions so I'm uploading a zip with the latest versions of the sideart (both Pink and teal) the bezel and instruction card just to be sure you have the latest versions. If you need any adjustments let me know.

This latest version also has the Nintendo text changed to Jaharr to also match the Marquee that Malenko posted. Feel free to use them any way you want - and I have the .psd version saved if you would like a copy of it (if you have photoshop and would like to make adjustments) Let me know and I'll upload it also.

Here is the latest set ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/nnecij4fml3jts6/StaciesArcadeFinal.zip ) Note : It does not include Malenko's Marquee so you will need to get it also from his earlier post.

That is up to you -- mainly the sideart changed several times due to comments and things found in previous posts so depending on what you want to use just pick the version you like best (ie. if you want it to say Donkey Kong get one prior to the change to Jacie's Arcade versions) -- If you don't like some changes but do like others and can not find a version with them all the way you want post what you want and I can modify one to your liking.

I don't currently have a CP artwork but can put one together -- would need to know the dimensions needed and the layout you intend to use ( ie. one or two player - only one button or six or eight - what admin buttons on the CP  - etc.

No problem -- Once you start the build and have dimensions etc. let me know which you want to use and I'll adjust those pieces to fit your cab dimensions and we can come up with something for a CP layout to fit what you want.

Right you are (or was that an optional addition ?) -- will have to look in game and see what they were changed to and get some screenshots of the items.

EDIT : Found an article on the Hack that had a pic of the new items (Pipe Wrench, Plunger, Wrench as gifts for Mario) when discussing the changes made - so here is an updated version with them changed (downsized PPI for forum to keep under 2MB limit)

On the original CP, you see DK, Pauline, and Jumpman. (L to R)

This makes sense with the game's original story line because:
  * DK is running away, dragging Pauline behind him.
  * Pauline is looking at Jumpman as he tries to save her.
  * Jumpman is looking at Pauline as he tries to save her.

In the new story line, Pauline is trying to save Jumpman from the clutches of DK.

To convey that story, Jumpman should be next to DK.

Has anyone considered swapping/horizontally mirroring Pauline and Jumpman on the CP?

This would match the role reversal in the game and leave DK facing left, Jumpman facing right, and Pauline facing left. (L to R)

So far, so good.

The one thing that still looks off is Pauline's left eyelash on both the CPO and the upper right of the bezel.

It was messed up in the original, too.

Scott
EDIT: Attached pic.  Also need to move that eye and eyebrow closer to her nose IMHO.

EDIT2: Don't forget to fix that same eye on the three full body Pauline figures on the bezel, too.

I'll look at fixing them this evening -- Not sure why they had it so messed up on the originals but it does need fixing.

EDIT : Had a few minutes before leaving so went ahead and adjusted Here's the latest :

Definitely heading in the right direction.

The composition of Pauline's face is almost there.

You may want to use a photo of someone's face at the same position and angle to tweak the positioning of Pauline's nose, lips, and left eye for better perspective and symmetry.

Also consider slightly enlarging the white in her right eye to balance her eyes.

Just noticed DK's legs are reversed relative to his upper body, too.   :o
(Look at his toes.)

Pauline also has a clipped toe and some teal overlaying her extended fingers.

How is she holding that heavy hammer with just her thumb pinching it to side of her palm?   ::)

Those were actually on the layer for the Pauline logos (leftover from the PDF import - was the AI format outline of the logos) - I didn't see it since that layer had been off while working on the DK and Mario corners. But is fixed now ! (Glad you guys are looking closely at these so the little things like that get fixed  :applaud: )

I got to get on the ball her birthday is sept 2nd. I'm sure I can get it done in a few weeks. This pinball machine is moving slow. The software takes  forever to get right. But yes yotsuya I'm gonna build an exact 2/3 scale Nintendo cabinet. Not sure of the inner workings. I may not have time to fool with software. I may have to get a card.

Thanks for all the suggestions - they really helped it look better.

@Jaharr -- I've got .psd versions of the 3 pieces and also some 300 PPI fullsize versions of the work ( The Forum here changes them to 72PPI when uploading to the forum and they have to be less than 2MB per pic ) I'll wait a day or so for any other adjustments to be noted (think they are pretty much done at this point but someone may spot something ! ) Then I'll upload 2 zip packages to my drop box and upload a link for you and others - The first will have the .psd formats with layers (so might be a fairly large download) and the second will have 300 PPI PNG format copies that are not resized by the forum.
