All the folks recommending Lubuntu/LXDE, Xubuntu/XFCE - you don't even need that much. Linux+X without a desktop environment, a few scripts, and you can bypass the entire bloat of the window manager all together. That's just window dressing you'll never see in a fullscreen frontend or emulator, so why bother with it at all?
