MaLa Driving me crazy
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:29:11 pm »
Good afternoon all. I have been working on getting a front end to work as I have a few different emulators, Sega, Super Model 2 and Super Model 3, Nestopia, and SNES, and when playing games I would like it to be more seamless. So I tried to use Hyperspin and my poor old gaming computer just absolutely choked on it and I just couldn't get the dang thing to work.

So on to MaLa which seems to be a good one on paper and it's reviewed well. So I download 1.74 following the directions I also download the command line version of MAME 152, I have a full rom set that doesn't include CHD's. I also have MAME UIFX32 version 152 as well.

Using the MaLa Wiki I attempt to get the front end set up just for mame and I can't get the dang MAME roms to be rocognized. I have the roms installed into a folder outside of both MAME installs So my path's are as follows; (I have everything installed onto a separate drive in the computer)

K:/Mame (command line version)
K:/Mame_Roms/roms
K:/MameUI32

It's the same for the other emulators as well. I then have MaLa in a folder labeled K:/MaLa174. I have followed the instructions for getting MAME set up and I can't get the dang thing to recognize the roms at all I keep getting an notice that says 0 roms found.....In the set up screen I direct the front end to the executable, and it creates the .ini and .xml files and I then direct it to the folder that contains the roms, so I am wondering why this isn't working....I have been reading and trying just about every variation that I know and I keep getting the 0 games returned.

I have also been trying to figure out how in the heck to get other layouts to work as well and no luck there either.

Thanks in advance.

Mmmmm.... well it's difficult to offer a solution without seeing first-hand what you are doing with your folder set-up. (outside of what you describe). There may be something to that still. Let's review the process for Mala/MAME setup...

The basic set-up for roms and Mala menu (for MAME) is as follows:
Start mala then right click your mouse and choose Options/Configuration. Now set your paths to your roms and emulator etc and once done press ok, it should now prompt you to create a list. If it doesnt press 2 to open options and choose games and the refresh main game list.

You may be just missing that final step of right clicking "refresh game list" when Mala is running.  ???

This forum is wealth of info if you know how to use it. Some other threads that may be of help:

Let me know if this helps at all...

Are your roms 7z files instead of zip files?

Mala 174 doesn't pick up 7zip files.  You'll need the newest wip version for that 1.820
