2nd build scaled down cab
« on: January 14, 2013, 10:59:42 am »
Soo like many others ive got the cab building bug.

After building my first bartop i want to go a bit bigger but not massive

My 1st build Retrocade

As the new years start I'm going to start my second project, this time I'm going to build a scaled down full size cab like this

Im hoping to go with custom Star Wars theme

And i hope to avoid the mistake's from my first build, like fitting better buttons and thicker Mdf so i can fit T-molding and instead of painting the wood I'm going to laminate it and apply vinyls to showing parts.

Im also going to do a full shell with no trace of windows,oh and im fitting the reset buttons on the back i keep turning my machine off by mistake

As always i need advice,

Im always on the look out for cheap motherboard bundles and Hard drives
So please post your links

Where can i get hold of cheap non wide screen monitors in the uk?

Can anyone recommend a cheap amp? to use with a set of speakers i have.

Has anyone fitted one of these instead of ipac? Any problems?

Link here

Anyone got any cool star wars themes
Going spare ; )

Here is my progress so far

My plans

Wood bought and cut at B & Q

Doing a dry fit

Cool!  Small cabs like that are kind of neat.  Look forward to seeing what direction you go with the Star Wars theme.

I've used these little guys in my bartops, and they work good.  They can tie into your 12v from the power supply.

2 channel 100watts, plenty loud for your project...

If you have some 3" or 4" speakers....these grills work great and are cheap.

Many users have reported lag issues with those Xin-Mo controllers.

You're better off going with the KADE, I-Pac, KeyWiz/GPWiz, or ZD Encoder IMHO.

no, but if you do get you a ground loop isolator, that will clear it up.

The Kade is pretty cheap and you could have pre ordered one on kickstarter for that price. With fully customised buttons and the ability to program different firmwares for consoles(i have mine in my xbox1), you get much more than what you pay for.

Nice project - good to see a UK build!

I would look for non wide screen monitors on eBid or Gumtree. What size are you looking for?

Isn't that just a panel, not a complete monitor.

Lots of progress today

First of thanks for the gum tree heads up, i found a ad with a guy wanting to sell bits after he upgraded

I got a box of bits that had this lot in it

4 x hard drives( 200 gig to 40)
3 x fans
1 x power supply
4 x gig of ram
1 x motherboard
1x dvd writer
1 x dell 19inch monitor

For £20 !

I decased the monitor

Broke out my new jig saw and cuts the side panels

Bit of sand paper it will fit

And with all parts ready i did a dry fit
(Some panels need trimming)

I had a play around with this setup i made with gum tree parts

I cut the front panel to size and fitted the motherboard self

Fitted these wheels

I fitted the monitor only to find its 1 inch of centre DOH

And i fitted the light behind the marquee

So i broke out the vinyl today

Prepared back panel sanded with fine wet and dry

Vinyl applied

Side panel (the bump is a fixing hole)

Side panel back in place

All parts back in place

I also fitted hinges on the door not my best work

So the final thoughts on vinyl its  much cleaner than spray/paint and i think it maybe a lot cheaper £19 will cover both machines, but the surface has to be perfect i had to refit a whole piece because a bit of wood dust got in the way and it really stood out if it had been paint i could have rubbed it down and did a touch up,

Ill be a lot happier when i have the groove cut and the t molding fitted i plan to do this before the side art goes on

I'm brainstorming a very similar cab.  Did you go .5inch or 3/4 MDF?

Awesome!  Thanks.
As a man with a bachelor's in chemistry, my head warps around the metric system and the American units.  Wish we could just go metric sometimes.

Can't wait to see the finished result.

Todays gum tree gold

So i needed power supplies for 2 cabs i
Hit amazon and found the one i bought for the retrocade £12 each before i hit the buy button i checked gum tree and found this advert

Basically if they had working psu i would be paying £10 for some extra bits

I threw him a email and asked if he still had them and would he take £20 and emailed back said yup he would as he wanted it cleared

This is what i got

He kept the software cds and manuals for everything

After i stripped it down, the 15 inch monitor will make a great 1 player mini bartop

Left over bits

Great little amp for one of the cabs

I plugged in both machines they booted but did not output a picture i have both manuals so i can have a read

So not done much lately so i thought id post a update, after the success with shelling Tron machine and setting it up correctly i thought id go back to my retrocade and replace the hard drive (1tb) with a much smaller 320 as i wasn't using most of it i also made it its own custom intro ill post it another time

Its also for sale (with out hyperspin and roms) if anyones interested

Looking and my 3 larger cabs i decided to chop one down to make another bartop as it seems to be more popular
Size

So all i need is inspiration for a theme for this little one

Galaga, Pacman, or Burgertime would be my choice of theme for Arcade related.  If going non Arcade then Aliens Vs Predator

I only thought about that as I have the following pics as canvas prints in my game room.  I don't have the last one but it looks like it could make the basis of a nice control panel.   (All credit must go to the original artists).
