If you turn on the computer you should be able to at least see the initial bios check screen before it starts trying to boot the hard drive.

If you can see that then the issue is the hard drive or videocard.
If you can’t even see the bios boot screen then the motherboard is likely shot and you’re looking at a new computer - dell gx280, 780 and a few others are good options.

If replacing the computer, you’ll need the nytric card out of your current computer ( where the wire harness connects to )

Yea that's why I'm thinking mother board. Was talking to a PC friend of mine said he may even have a mother board like this one laying around. I might drop it off and see if we can swap it out. I'm sure drivers will be fun to figure out! Thanks again for the help! Now I know why it was on the curb for free! :) At least I have nothing into it yet.

I wish I could find a PGA like that on the curb. Easy fix once you identify what the problems are.
I’d have it running in a hurry.
What’s your goal - fix to add to your collection or fix then sell?

Buddy of mine who is a Philly cop was driving around and saw it out front of a fire station. He stopped in and asked them what was up with it. They said "it was working" and the guys were just not playing it so they put it out on the curb. Since my buddy could not jam it in the back of the police suv due to the size of it, he called me up and said come get this thing! So I jumped in my truck and ran down and grabbed it. I guess you could say I saved it as there was a huge storm coming in and the back door was off so this thing would have been soaked if I didn't grab it when I did. It rained the rest of the day and into the night that day. I've actually picked up a handful of games over the 20 plus years that were thrown out.

As far as what to do with it I'm thinking I'll get it running and play it for a bit. It had a dollar bill changer in it and that was all I really wanted for one of my pins. Then I found you fine folks so I thought I'd try to bring this one back to life at least with some help. I like to learn the systems out there. I might use it for trade bait down the road. I'm more into pinball machines. This game is a bit big for my arcade. I have about a dozen 80's arcade games and a dozen or so pinballs machines so I'm kinda full. But I'd like to play it and see how I like it first for sure. My brother is a big golf guy and he has a big basement so I might even take it over to his man cave for awhile. :)

Oh nice I'll check that out for sure! Well it's alive! Found a bad cap on the mother board. Replaced that and the fan for the video card was all full of funk. But she it alive! Just have to put it all back together and get it back in the cabinet! Can't wait to play it!

Sad to hear that they just put it on the curb because they didn't play it anymore. But good for you in getting it working. It truly is the best golf game around. Have fun.

Yea I guess it stopped working and they dumped it :( I'll give her some love. Can't wait to play it that's for sure. The last golf game I played was Lee Trevinos' Fighting Golf! I think I had a golf game cart for my Neo-Geo as well! Who knows maybe I'll fall in love and keep it!

Another questions for you guys...  The leg levelers were beat and I didn't want them tearing up my carpet so I took them all off. I have ones for my pinball and arcade games but they are much thinner. What size are these and who do you guys like to use to buy them? I usually put all my games on sliders. Thanks!

Most have 4 caster wheels on the bottom.
But you have the version 3 cabinet which I’ve never owned or restored yet.

Mine has both casters and levelers. It also has a rarer control panel I believe. Tom will probably be the best to help you know which model cabinet you have.

New to the board, but excited that there is a group out there that also likes this game.

I have a PGA Tour Golf Team Challenge Version 3, not to be confused with PGA Tour Golf III (made that mistake and now I have the disk set for PGA Tour Golf III). My hard drive died and I purchased one of EBAY and I am getting a DONGLE error. My game is saying VERSION 3 and the hard drive says it is version 4.

Oh, the original hard drive just clicks when it spins.

Can anyone help please?

Hey guys- I would love to build a PGA Cab. I have found the discs but I am lost with additional parts needed. XP pc, dongle, and GPU? What interface is needed for the trackball? Is that the game board or is there a game board?

If this is the wrong thread for these questions I am sorry.

Also, does anyone have a pc loaded and ready to be dropped in a cab?

Thank you,
Robbie

Previous page shows the nytric card which is needed to run this game. Without it, you’re not getting anywhere.

Hey guys I'm back to troubleshooting my game again. I installed some wheels on the bottom so I can move this monster around to work on it.  So to recap where I'm at so far... I found a bad cap on the mother board fixed that and I've got some life from the PC now. I might have monitor issues so I'm using a flat panel to see what's going on and to get the PC booted for now we'll trouble shoot the monitor next.
I power on the cab, I see the intel screen, I see the dos screen, I see refreshing game menus, and I hear a ball drop in a hole eventually and then she just sits on this screen forever. Every now and then I get a flash to black but this is about it. I waited a good amount of time and there is where it sits. I changed the white dongle on the back with another one I had and I tried a card in the slot reader (goes green as soon as I insert it) Everything seems to be hooked up as it should. Any ideas? Thanks!

Possible bad ram. Or bad hard drive.
Reseat the ram and videocard.

Do you have another hard drive that you can reinstall Team Challenge onto?

I have a Need for speed carbon cab. I believe it has that part. Could I use that same computer from that cab without messing up that game’s config or should I get a different pc for PGA?

Are you going to be moving the PC from NFS cabinet to a PGA cabinet?
If so, you can swap hard drives each time you move the PC between the cabinets.

Yes. That’s my plan. So I need a dongle? I imagine it’s game specific?

You’ll need a PGA wire harness since you don’t already have a proper PGA cabinet.
A control panel. If you ever intend to get online, you’ll need the proper card reader.

So here is where I'm at. Made a video. This is after I re-seated the ram and video card. It will sit like this forever pretty much...  I do have tons of hard drives laying around. Is it as easy as making a clone of it?

Is it possible to use a standard Jamma harness and modify for the cab? I would love to play online with you guys! So I guess a card reader will be needed.

You could make a harness out or a D-37 cable if you know how to map the wires. Global VR has manuals available on their website for viewing.

Sweet! Thanks!

Quick question, when installing should I install (in this order below) from a Windows XP OS to a fat32 IDE HD? Should I use DVDs for the install discs or usb?
1. Challenge Recovery disc 3.0.0
2 Challenge 1_2 3
3. Challenge 2_2

Burn ISOs to CD as ‘CD image’. The recovery disc wipes your hard drive and installs windows XPE.

Recovery disc then Challenge game discs 1-2 when prompted. You must have the Challenge dongle.

( Don’t use the other ISOs in your picture )

The pc didn’t have a nytric card in it. After looking In the cab I found the mini near the audio card. The dongle is connected via usb. There is no D-37 input. I am in disbelief a quarantined bummer.

Had some more time to tinker tonight. First...  drummer_god thanks so much the hook up that worked spot on!! :) My PC is up and doing it's thing booting right up. My monitor was'nt working. Discovered the neck board had slide off the back of the monitor. Pushed that back on and I have a real nice looking picture! My card reader works. There was a card with the game and I used that and it loaded as it should. Sounds works great and the game was on coins. I set that to free play and after several power cycles, the settings are saving as well. So it seems all is well but....

My only issue is my trackball is not working at all. :(  Looks to be wired good I pulled the connector apart on the back of the PC that looks clean and fine. In test mode all the buttons on the control panel work but I have nothing at all from the trackball. Figured I'd ask here to see where to look next. I do need a trackball rebuild kit the bearings sound beat but I have no trackball output. Everything else seems to function as it should. Thanks again guys for the help!

You probably don’t have power to the nytric card.

Add a 4-pin molex connection from within your PC to the nytric card. Should do the trick.
USB power is enough to power the buttons but not the trackball. Also, make sure the trackball is grounded to the underside of the control panel.

If powering the nytric card doesn't fix it, here are some common trackball troubleshooting steps.

1. With power off and multimeter set to ohms, check for continuity between ground on the Red boards and ground on the PCB or power supply.

2. With power on and multimeter set to volts DC, check if 5v is present at both Red Boards.

3. Check the voltage on the four data lines. (2 per Red Board)

When you slowly move the trackball, you should see each data line alternate between logic high (near 5v) and low (near 0v) as the encoder wheel turns, blocking and un-blocking the optos to generate a quadrature waveform like this.

4. If one of the data lines is stuck high or low, check if one of the two IR LEDs on the board is burned out.
- Use your cel phone/digital camera to see if the LEDs are lighting -- the wavelength can't be seen by the human eye, but can be seen by a digital camera.

5. If one of the data lines is stuck high or low and both LEDs are OK, the problem is probably either with a Red Board photodiode or the wiring.
- Swap X- and Y-axis Red Board harness connections.
- If the problem follows the harness connection, it's probably the wiring.
- If the problem doesn't follow the harness connection, it's probably the Red Board photodiode.
- If the problem disappears, it may have been due to a poor connection earlier.  Swap them back and retest.

Yup forgot to plug the power back into the card from the PC power supply. Whoops! She is up and running doing her thing finally. Trackball needs to be rebuilt my thumbs are on fire!  :lol :lol I'll have to order a trackball rebuild kit then we'll be ready to really play golf! Thanks again all for all the help!
