What to do when your friend has gone full r-tard on arcade tattoos
« on: September 01, 2012, 04:36:50 pm »

Been a good friend of mine for many years.  Not even sure how to respond to this.

(he's got GAME OVER across his knuckles, btw)

Plenty of real estate left on the legs... Never understood why people get tattoos below the elbows and above the collar...

Because it screams "Pay me less!" But I suppose there are those who aspire to janitors, cart pushers, and septic tank cleaners... I love my large tattoos, but I love money more.

Because you posted in hopes of non judgmental commentary? The tats appear to be done in a single color on the backs of the hands, somewhat reminiscent of PVT Bean in the film Cadence. He had 8-balls where they show.

Actually, I know priests, shrinks, child advocates, and one lawyer (he wears thin gloves for court) with tats like that and they're paid very well for what they do. It has more to do with gaining trust from the very people (children and teens) they're trying to help than trying to appear professional.

Actually, I know priests, shrinks, child advocates, and one lawyer (he wears thin gloves for court) with tats like that and they're paid very well for what they do.

Sort of related, the wife of a pastor I used to work for had a lower back tattoo. He had no idea that they were referred to colloquially as "tramp stamps"... sharing that info with him was a real highlight of my life (he was kind of a ---meecrob---).  ;D

But I agree, while there are still lots of jobs that might look down upon tattoos, there are plenty that a tattoo would have a neutral or positive effect. Just depends on what people are going for. My parents probably saw tats as suspicious... I find them disarming, as so many of my friends have had them. That doesn't mean there are a lot of poorly chosen tattoos, though (Atari 2600 space invader? 5200 version was so much better).
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

I like art in all it's forms. Of course I like some art more than others... getting tattoos of arcade game characters is not high on my list of *good art but maybe it is to him. Who am I to judge? And as far as I am concerned it SHOULDN'T be holding him back from any job he is capable of doing, but then again I am pretty much open to people doing what they want as long as it doesn't hurt others.

*I like arcade art, but it doesn't make good permanent body art IMO.

I would encourage him to get more tattoos.  They look very impressive.

Being negative or prude doesn't help anyone in this case.  When I see people with tattoos I think they are pretty brave wearing them in public.

I would be supportive of your friend's decision, being the prime benefit of having a friend that shares the same hobby is wonderful.

Personally I find tattoos to be a violation of your body's temple, but we are all different.

Besides he hasn't gone full r-tard.  This might be a contender for full r-tard:

The hands are a bad place for tattoos.  The skin is always stretching and moving, and that leads to pretty rapid pigment migration, which can make them go all fuzzy looking.

Maybe he's hoping for the CRT effect when it happens :)

Tats are more common than ever, and chicks under 30 seem to go more for them than not.

There's some really good tattoo artists. But, as Randy mentioned, the skin changes. Most of all, it doesn't look natural. It would be one thing if the body pigmented the colors in. Even better if they were translucent, let alone holographic.

Bottom lines: do you want to look at the same stuff for years on end? Do you want to be licking over stuff you might not lick in the real world? And so on.

I don't. So none for me, none for my lovin other.

Just my 2 cents.

My personal financial universe fell apart this year. Lost my job of 12 years at the same time my wife was pregnant with our first child.

Never in my life did I see so many tattoos as amongst the other people waiting in line at the various offices for the social net (WIC, Food stamps, Medicaid).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.
