some cab sketches - thoughts?
« on: May 22, 2012, 08:53:22 pm »
hey all,

kicking around ideas to build from scratch, here are a few quick sketches i did.  not quite sure of the theme just yet.  wanted to see if you all have a favorite...

just curious, anyone ever build a wonder woman invisible plane machine?  i'm thinking of a machine totally built from plexi, how awesome would that be.  you could use transparant aluminum.  wait, that hasn't been invented yet...

I can't seem to find it right now, but there was a member here building a Plex on hardwood frame cab. It was a real beaut too. All nice joinery, the entire inside was going to be visible.

Haven't seen any updates on it in a while though, so I've forgotten what the build name was.

I like some of the side treatments you have there, esp the 1'st and 3'rd. Offset them and put in some hidden theater lighting and that could look quite nice.

As I'm looking at your sketches with each one I go "ooh" then "ooh even better" until I get to the last one which is kinda "eh."  I think #2 is the best one.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

funny enough, that was the first one i drew, look at all the erasing on that paper!

thanks for the feedback guys.

btw, love the switchcade!  i was just thinking of a panel that pulls apart like a dining room table and there you go, someone beat me to it ;)

I like 1 best, my only criticism is the curve at the top near the Marquee, doesn't seem to fit with all the sharp angles.

didnt even notice that, good catch.  here are some refined sketches.  for the angles, i tried to keep the lines even with the marquee, back of the machine and also the slant of the panel.

for some reason, the center design, those angles remind me of star trek, hence the logo on the side.  if i did go with that design, the logo would be back lit of course :)

anyone have any recommendations on how to go about lighting up those edges?  if those side pieces are flat against the recessed side pieces, i can't really backlight the edges from inside.  i was thinking LED light strips but they don't project even light the way a neon tube does.

open to suggestions and thanks!

I say go with the LED strips. Pretty pleased with how mine turned out. Here's a video of a recent test...

I would route the back side edge of the outer panel with a straight bit a ways to be able to hide the LED strips on the back side of the panel.

I don't think this stuff is cheap, but it would be really slick edge banding...

Nice work- love the 'subtle' Atari logo :)

What with Jonny Ive getting a knighthood today, I wonder what his arcade sketch would look like? :)
