Before you do any more soldering/desoldering try these checks:
Verify no crossed wires/shorts.
1. Power the system down.
2. Put multimeter in Ohms.
3. Connect the meter leads to the joystick to verify very high resistance (>1 MegOhm) between the 10 pairs of pins listed below. There should be no shorts (1-2 ohms) unless the joystick is pressed.
1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5
2-3, 2-4, 2-5
3-4, 3-5
4-5
Verify joystick is functional.
1. Power the system down.
2. Put multimeter in Ohms.
3. Connect one lead of your multimeter to the center pin and the other to one of the outer pins.
4. Meter should read open.
5. Press joystick in all 4 directions. (U, D, L, R) Only one direction should read a short. (1-2 ohms)
6. Change multimeter lead to different outer pin, repeat steps 4 and 5.
7. Repeat step 6 until all outer pins have been checked.

I remember the first time I tried soldering the digi mini joystick I held the soldering iron on the ground pin for to long and It messed up the connections on the inside. I ended up buying a couple of these because I suck at soldering. If your running out of soldering points you could always trace back a little on the GBA and scrape away to open up a new soldering points, just be careful not to over due it.

thanks scott, this is just the sort of help I need. I'm gona crack on this week and follow your instruction. I'll let you know how I get on ;)

Yeah, I see what you did.
I'm not sure if it's FUBAR or not, I never peeled back the buttons that far. My guess is that it isn't. I can see four contact points in each corner where the button used to be, but I can't see anything in the middle, this suggests to me that the button press is making a contact between the top two corner contacts and the bottom two.
Looking at your image closely, the top two seem connected and I would make a guess that these are the switch and the two lower corner contacts are the common/ground.
You need to power up the unit and try putting a piece of wire between the top and bottom contacts to see if it works.
This is a super fiddly job but the end results can be great.
