Good start.  Small control panel, though.  Just planning to play Space Invaders?

front Door added

And a tft monitor bracket made..... you'll only see this from the rear once inside the cab.... it will be painted a different colour to the rest of the cab also.... its just alittle something you make us smile if and when we have to open the rear of the cab...... its the things you dont see sometimes that make all the differance;

Your uncle has very good woodworking skills. Looks really clean and sturdy.
Did he put that sawboard together himself? Nice to have, for those of us who don't have room for a table saw.
What tool did he use for the angle-cut on the top piece?

I gotta ask the question, how come you went with a Space Invaders theme, when your cabinet looks closer to a Centipede design?

Seems to me that you could have gone with a really cool updated slim-version of a Space Invaders:

thx for the comments... in ref to the top angle... i'll have to answer that once he e-mails me with the answer.... (he reads this forum also) the cab design is one he designed..... it has some elements of the street fighter cab we made, which is based in some parts on a dynamo cab.... we didn't like the square lines of the stock invaders cabs..... so we just decided to make a "modern remake" of the cab... but we are gonna use the original artwork to keep that retro feel......

this cab and the street fighter cab are the first cabs that he's made..... he has a real eye for attention to detail..... they look so much better in real life. i'm lucky to have somebody so talented in the family..... which reminds me.... i need one of my house doors adjustin' :D

you can see the street fighter cab and the build process of this cab on the website we made..... its just a showcase site that shows our current projects and future plans and ideas.....

thx again..... i'll get back to you on the cutting question

Hmm, I like the space invaders thing, but being that you made it out of MDF, I'd be very concerned about weakness.

So you convinced your uncle to handle all the woodworking and you take care of the computer stuff?

Well it is true when they say, there's a sucker born every minute.

i suppose thats a complement....... and just for the record its his cab not mine...... it all started when i had mame on a computer... he saw the retro games and we decided it would be cool to make the street fighter cab (mine). after we finshed, he decided he wanted one also. so he started to make his own....

i can't handle a screw driver never mind power tools..... he does this stuff in his sleep and he enjoys doing it.... so much so we've made a site to show case the cabs that have been made....

its great to share ideas for upcoming projects, its fun and allot cheeper that when we played with cars!  ;D

Get in that shop and hold down some wood.  Or make him some lemonade.  Learning some woodworking skills will be useful your entire life.

The computer stuff is the easiest part these days.  If the U360 existed when I did my cab it would have been even more of a joke to put together.

Great job so far on the cab!   :applaud:  Your uncle is a very talented man.

May I ask why the CP box is also on sliders?  Any plans to lock it somehow?  I would imagine that could get rather annoying whenever the joystick is pulled towards the player.

after making sure we have the clearance..... the pc internals are being mounted under the cp. As a result we made the cp slide so that (if needed) we could access the pc and cp wiring easier.

and yes, its lockable.... thx for the comments

absolutely awesome work.
Ive been reading articles for a month now and am itching to start cutting the 8 bits of MDF in my shed lol.  Some nights I have 20 tabs open on this screen gathering info and slowly learning. This by far is the most spectacular cabinet I have seen.
Im the proud owner of a Police Trainer arcade game and will endeavour to add a pc and change the control panel to be able to play all the Mame classics. Hopefully soon I can add a few pics of my own.

PS  Does your uncle need free accommodation in Australia  :lol

I love the totally pointless attention to detail on this build for things that no one will ever see. I really identify with it. The monitor mount and invader on the front are excellent.

What are you going to finish the cab in/with? The invader on the front would make laminate a challenge. Have you considered spraying it?

Edited to add:
Off topic.... Do you still have the red Mini 1000? I love minis  ;D

I've been watching this build come along.  Very well done woodwork but I'm really excited to see some component installation.  Great stuff and keep it coming!  Are you just test fitting everything or are you not painting the inside?

So the comp is going right under the CP?

How does that work with button and JS depth?

All tried and tested for depth.... also the computer is quite set back

Stellar build, kind of strange that the the computer is going underneath the CP like Green Giant commented. What is going to be done with all the space at the bottom then?

Great looking build.  I never would have gotten that LCD mounted as I would have had the mount hanging on my wall.  Can't wait to see that little invader on the front painted too.  Should look good.

Work top edging strips  ;D

Started fitting hardware now...... i think its just T-mould, marquee light, config of the software and the wiring left! :)

Blue and the white goes really well together. The red t-mould is just there to hold the perspex in place. The final t-mould will be white.

Jesus H Christ.

This thing gets more and more ridiculous.  Nice to see someone rocking some LED strips.  From what I can tell, those are cold cathodes behind the marquee.  Why not use more LED strips back there?

Where is this thing going to be located?  Hopefully the middle of a room or perhaps on a rotating platform.

I dig the back door but would have routed it out to look like a space invaders game.  That would have taken forever tho cutting out all the little shapes.  There are so many nice elements here that can be incorporated on a variety of builds.  Way to set the bar high with some wonderful attention to detail.

Wow.  Please tell me you are planning on opening up this thing to show off every part to everyone right?

I don't think I could ever put so much effort into making something that noone ever sees so perfect.

This cab is really turning out great. I love the alien on the front door, and the plexiglass back-door. What I don't like as much is the amount of buttons (I counted 32). Why so many? Keep up the good work!

Thax for your comments...

we could of used a shift button and just had 8 buttons......

but we found that people couldn't find what they wanted to play. with the admin buttons people can see the label and it just makes sense..... anybody can just stand infront and know how to play it.......

before it was "how do i find...... and how do i etc"

good question tho ;) the buttons on the side are pin buttons

I may have missed this in the thread, but what's the purpose of the curved cuts in the t-molding of the left corner of the CP box?

its to allow clearance for the sticks when the lid is closed.

I thought that might be it, but it didn't look like P1's stick was that close to the corner.

Does that mean there was in fact a flaw when building this cab?

Thank God, I was worried you guys weren't human.

Such a nice blue wiring job and then I see the ugly power supply and accompanying cable mess. Why don't you use a decent modular power supply? Modular means you can remove all those wires that you are not using. Just as an example:

Nice to see you making a second cab, i can see you learned from version 1. its more in proportion now.

just make sure your hdd istn mounted directly to the mdf, it will make loud noise, and those small fans make pitch sounds, maybe replace them with 1 big one..
like the back and lights!

I'm about to start painting my cab and your black sections look perfect. What kind of paint did you use and how many coats. Any additional magical painting tips would be great too.

I'd love to see a cocktail table next. :)

two coats with a brush..... 3rd with a roller...... lets it go tacky and go over it again with the roller (gives a texture effect)

Very well done, jahilton2002. I like the design for the joystick and buttons, and the colors you chose for them blends in very well with the rest of the cabinet. I'm looking for a cooling fan or two for the MAME cabinet that me and my father are using. What type did you use for your Space Invades cabinet?

Thank you. That will be a great help with the assembly of my own MAME cabinet. I was referred to this section for looking to see how other people have applied cooling fans to their PC, so your thread has been a major help. Thank you again.

Newegg has some cheaper 4 packs of 120mm fans.

Not meaning to threadjack.  I'm loving the inside of your cab by the way.  It reminds me of an expensive server rack, something that you would see being prototyped in a cleanroom somewhere.  You expect fog to pour out from your liquid nitrogen cooling.  Pretty amazing stuff. :notworthy:

Thank you for the link, those fans look like they would work for my project. Anyhow, good job on the cabinet. Space Invaders is one of my favorite arcade games as well.

gotta say it is a fantastic cab.you should go into business with your uncle.watched your videos yesterday and it looks even better (if that's possible) than in the pics. noticed your'e from england and would be interested where you got your artwork printed and what sort of price you paid (if it's not been too cheeky  :)  )
