File prep before sending to Gameongrafix?
« on: July 27, 2011, 04:26:59 pm »
I finished up my cpo artwork recently and I will be sending it off to gameongrafix for printing.
I created it in Paint Shop Pro X in 300 dpi at actual cpo size and I saved a copy as a Tiff. I want it to come out as good as possible so I selected no compression.
The uncompressed tiff file is 463MB.
does this sound right. I tried a tiff with LZW compression and it came out as 20MB which is about 10MB smaller than the psp file.

Is the uncompressed tiff the best route to go. I understand I may need to mail it on a disc rather then upload.

Thanks

My side art was 50x26 inches at 300dpi and the file size was about 450megs.  I didn't do any compression, and I loaded the file over the internet directly to the GOG website.

I wasn't sure if compressing the file will be noticable, so I just started the two sides uploading and I was done in about 2.5hrs.

Complete mini arcade cabinet plans available.

Yip they take massive files - My side art was zipped at 900MB.PSD ( :lol) The upload took ages but they got it.
Go for the PSD or TIFF (no compression)
My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

I'm pretty sure that the LZW compression for TIFFs is lossless, so you can compress without any degrading of your image.

I read something that leads me to believe also that LZW is lossless but I get a little nervous when my file size is 10MB smaller than original

Man, I went to Stinkos to get a print out of my cpo today. my plan was just to make sure it all looks good before sending the file to Gameongrafix.
Well first off stinkos can only accept a pdf file for some reason, even though every other shop accepts tiffs.
So they somehow took my tiff and converted it or whatever. I went to pick it up and it looked like crap. anything blue was now purple and it had considerable bleeding. at least it was to correct scale but thats it.
they told me to do it in CMYK because they don't do color matching. The actual print guy wouldn't even talk to me, he talked to the counter girl.
If I remember correctly, gameongrafix wants it in rgb so thats what I wanted the proof to be in.
And to top it off, it seems as though the Gameongrafix site is down today, oh boy  :banghead:
I guess I'll get done one of these days.

There are all different color profiles so something wasn't set up right on their printer or pc.  I print stuff like this all the time and printing from a program like Photoshop might give you one result where if you print it from acrobat it could look totally different.  Most of the people at kinkos aren't graphic designers so they won't know how to tweak it to print right.

I just got my marquee from GameOnGrafix today.  Sent the file to them about a week ago (100MB Photoshop file) uploaded through there site.  I had to let it upload overnight but they got it.  Looks really good IMO.  It's nice being able to hold something I created on the computer.  I wouldn't worry about it.  Send them the uncompressed file.  If they have a problem they'll let you.  Had to upload mine twice.  The first time something didn't take.  But overall I'm really, REALLY happy with it.  Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,
yeah thats where I'm at now. This weekend I'm just gonna send both my cpo and marquee files over to Gameongrafix and see how it goes. I printed out a rough quick draft to size and taped it up to the control panel and it all fits great and I know it'll look great after being printed so I'm pretty excited

I'd like to hear more about how this goes.  I'm right behind you in this process.

Do you know if the cpo overlays are easy to cut if not an exact fit?  Or is it supposed to be cut by us?

I got my CP overlay from Game on Grafix, and it was very easy to cut with a razor.  The most significant issue I had was that the CP itself didn't have perfectly smooth edges.  Every so often the razor would 'catch' on a rough spot... but the overlay itself was no problem to cut.  I also cut out the area for the buttons and joystick with a razor.

I'm nearing this phase as well, and had a similar question on sizing and borders.  Are any borders necessary in the art, or should the artwork just contain the exact size of the CP?  When printed, is there a white border added that needs to be trimmed or something like that?
