ESC spinner games
« on: August 26, 2010, 01:45:53 pm »
I think I saw this some where but can't find it now; is there a list of spinner games that didn't freely spin vs ones that spun nonstop and would require an ESC? I just got my TT2 with the ESC and am having a heck of a time playing arkanoid with the ESC on!

Have you properly adjusted the sensitivity of the control within MAME?

Yeah I used the wiki (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Spinner_Turn_Count) which is incredibly helpful, but I guess the spinner just spins so smoothly it still makes it very sensitive. I saw the upgraded spinner knob on your site with the larger diameter knob and the felt on the bottom to slow down and make it have a little more friction, so maybe I will have to try that. For super sprint however, the smooth rotation is great. That's why I was looking for the page that listed free spinning vs more static spinner games.

One thing to try is reducing that number even more than what is shown there.  You are using the basic knob, which is smaller in diameter than the knob intended for use with that game.  This makes the controls more sensitive than they would be otherwise.  Doing this may be enough for you.  BTW, can you imagine trying to play with one of those "long spin time" spinners with the heavy flywheels?  ;)

But yes, for a more "gear-or-potentiometer-like" control, the Accu-twist option on a premium knob is the answer.  Simply letting that knob rest on the pad and tightening it will give you the feel you are looking for, without making it harder to turn.

As for the free spinning games, there are very few.  Racing games benefit from it, and of course Tempest.  There are probably one or two others, but I honestly can't think of more.  The rest seem to be more interested in precise control than momentum on the spinner.

I agree that I would not want any more free spinning in a spinner. I think the TT2 with the ESC feels really good for super sprint, which is one of the main games I bought the spinner for. I really don't even know what other spinners are out there besides the one from ultimarc, but chose the TT2 because I saw that it mounted in a normal button hole. It definitely was the easiest install so far... drill.... put on.... plug board into spinner and PC and done.

My TT2 with token knob/6" wheel come in today so I'm pretty excited to start playing as well. If you go with the token top you won't need the ESC, IIRC

Let me know what you think of the wheel. I would eventually like to get another TT2 for racing games, and would like to know if the wheel adds a lot or if the novelty will wear off.
