I assume that I'm going to need some bespoke graphics created because if the unusual cabinet shape and I also want any underlay to also cover up the LCD screen surrounds as they spoil the look somewhat.
Yep.
So what are my options guys?
1. Figure out what kind of theme you want. Give the cabinet a title, a name. What characters do you want to feature? Objects? What are you into, what are your favourite things? Do you want it game-related?
2. Think about the colours you want. For a cabinet like this, playing with the idea of opposite colours squaring off could be cool. You can do a White and Black theme, Red Vs. Blue, etc... or you can go the generic Mame cabinet route and throw up a bunch of different characters on it, w/ lightning effects, or metal plating...but that's been done to death.
3. Pay someone to make the art, or do the art yourself.
4. Print the art.
5. Cut the art to the specific size you need.
6. Apply the art.
is there a way to get something cut exactly to specification or alternatively is it possible to have any artwork applied directly to the glass rather than laid underneath?
Yes, take a ruler and a Utility knife and cut it to how you want it.
Re: Artwork on glass - you could look into silkscreening, but I doubt that's cheap.
This is my first (of hopefully many) attempts to design a cabinet and any help or advice would be awesome.
I suggest you peruse the Project Announcements forum. There are a lot of cabinets, and a lot of themes. Maybe that'll give you some ideas that you can brain-storm over. Much better than calling out into the ether for people to pick out the design for you. In the end, this is your cabinet and you're going to have to look at it all the time.
If you have a loose idea of what you want, that could help others with suggestions. Posting something and saying "here, design this for me" leaves it open for practically anything.
How about a Justin Bieber theme?
Hanna Montana?
Disco?
Nasa?
Dinosaurs?
You see what I'm saying? We can suggest anything, but you gotta give us something to go off on.
