This is what I did with my Mortal Kombat. Not to mention the added benefit of having to change them less often.

Couple questions:
How do you feel about all the player start buttons on the player 2 side of the cabinet? Does that cause any issues in a 4 player continue-athon game?
Is the 3rd and 4th player joystick angle a problem? It seems like you have a perfect setup for SmashTV if the joysticks were straight.

The panel was my first attempt and not perfect. I will probably redesign down the road. The good thing is that we seldom have four players going all at once and when we do, usually someone hits the player buttons for number 3. I did not realize that players 3 and 4 need their own coin in buttons, so I mounted them underneath afterward!

I actually took them out and put in a single fluorescent tube...
