Title: It lives!!! but limps
Post by: 80s Kid on January 03, 2010, 04:11:33 pm
Well, this site has been more help than i could have ever imagined. I have always wanted to build a cabinet but never knew where to start. So after months of lurking around and reading, I took the plunge and ordered my parts and built a cabinet. Having read as many threads as i could, i felt confident that i could build one. I went with J-Sticks, I-Pac4, electric ice buttons, turbo twist 2, and an electric ice track ball. Software is Winxp SP2, Mame 0.136 and the latest version of Maximus Arcade. My problem now is that i can not get my track ball and spinner to work with mame. It works in windows though. I have done some reading and changed the ini file in mame to read mouse=1 and still nothing. Am I missing something simple and overlooking it?

The arcade is not in its final resting place. It is just where all my friends left it when we got it inside the house. After the workout they got, they all took off. So once its in place and has the coin door on and the plexi on the front, i will have better pictures.

Great job!
Very clean and neat, plus I see it has an "easy button". Ive got one of those on the desk at work.
About the trackball and spinner, make sure the mouse is enabled in the mame cfg or ini file.

Just re-read your post and see that you have already checked the ini setting.

Thanks for the comment.

I should have hooked up the easy button to the spinner and trackball and i probably wouldn't be having this problem LOL. The kids had been playing in that room all night while we watched UFC which would account for the mess. Which i guess makes sence since my friends decided not to carry the arcade into my theater room and leave it in the play. haha

Do the trackball and spinner work in Windows?

You might try hitting "tab" while in a spinner/trackball game and make sure it's configured to use the proper controls.

Thanx. I just tried "tab" and it says "mouse x" for my controls. I am assuming that this means it is configured for a mouse. But it still does not work.

Well i tried everything i read on this site and the internet to get the spinner working. Turns out it might be the Maximus front end isn't configured right. I grabbed MameUI and i got the spinner working in 5 seconds flat. So i guess i just need to really look into the config of the software.

I'm using Maximus Arcade. If you go into the section where you tell it where to find Mame.exe and go to the bottom you can issue commands to run on startup. I have -mouse in that section and mine works fine in Maximus. If you need a screen shot let me know and I'll post one here.

Thanks, a screen shot would be handy. I think i know where you are talking about but a visual always helps :)

I had to use an image from the Maximus site. When I went to  take the screen shot I realized there was no graphics programs on my cab. Not even MS Paint. You put the -mouse command in box #9 in the image below. There was already stuff in this box that Maximus must have put there. I just added it to the end off the line with a space after the last command that was there. I hope this helps.

Wow.  Thanks for some good advice.  I am also having the same exact problem and am also using maximus.  So what exactly do you type in that command line box? ....something about "-mouse command?"  Is that what you type?  -mouse command?

Thanks

Are you using command line MAME?

I'm not really sure what that means?  All I know is that I'm using an older version of Mame32.

Everytime I try to use the newest version of mame nothing seems to work?

Does your version of Mame have a GUI besides Maximus? If so I don't know if this will work with it.

When you upgrade to a newer version of Mame are you updating your ROM's as well?

For sure...i just ordered the plexi today. The only reason it didn't have it on yet was some friends came over before i was quite done so i took them up on the help to get it in the house. It went down a flight of stairs and was heavy...even when empty LOL

And as for getting my spinner working. I recompiled mame and now everything works. The only issue i am having now has nothing to do with playing the actual arcade. I need to find a way to go through the games and get rid of the indescent one(kids playing the arcade) and the ones that don't run and the ones i don't care to play. I tried romlister but it won't output a file for maximus. I even got in contact with the programmer and he said maximus doesn something funny and the program is iffy at best to run with maximus. Are there any other options?

There are some options in Maximus to block Adult content and I believe there is also one for games that aren't complete or don't work. As far as ones you don't want to play I just have a favorites list of the ones I do play a lot.

Thanks, i will have to check for those options in maximus. I tried making a favorites list but i simply can not get it to work. I am electronically deficient haha. My friends always make fun of me and have even bought me those magnetic bracelets since everything electrical i touch seems to quit working haha. Maybe i will have to have one of them make my favorites list LOL

Have you went to the MA site and looked at the documentation there? It's fairly decent. Just don't get the pdf files. Joomla or whatever they use for the website didn't convert them worth a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- and the edges are chopped off and thing are overlapping each other in spots. I printed a couple hundred pages and realized after looking at it it has all these issues.

Below are a couple more screen shots from the site. You can see the check boxes to disable mature roms and disable non-working roms. There is also a screen shot of a check box to capture mouse/trackball input. Maybe that will fix your issue.
