I'm using Sherwin Williams all-purpose oil-based Gloss enamel on a test piece (for my CP) and seeing coat 1, I think its gonna be too glossy for me. I chose it for durability (glossier=tougher) and was planning on doing 2 or 3 coats. If I want to knock the sheen off it, can I use oil based Satin as a topcoat? That way I'd keep the durability of the gloss as an underskin, right?
I'm testing full Gloss, full Satin, and Gloss with Satin topcoat but its gonna take forever (trying to treat the test with the full attention that the CP will be) so if you've got some experience, let me know!
Any other options, say just a Satin oil based polyurthane topcoat?

I'm not sure what look you're after but I do know in general, to topcoat any gloss finish, you'll need to hit it with some steel wool to rough it up a bit or your top coat won't stick very well.
I put about 20 coats of poly on my buffet's top, using 220 up to 600 wet dry sandpaper between coats. Probably overkill, but it does look good now :)

Stay tuned for black paint BATTLE ROYALE!
3 coats of Valspar Latex Porch and Floor
VS
3 coats of Rustoleum Oil-based Satin
VS
3 coats of Sherwin Williams Oil-based All-surface Enamel
All 3 are on CP test pieces primed 2x with Kilz, with nice sanding and 3 days drying each coat. My odd shaped CP wont take plexi or CPO so I'm gonna send them each thru the gauntlet of fingernails, watches, car keys, etc to determine which has both the durability and the look to cover my control panel!

Cool. definitely let us know what you find out.
My money's on the rustoleum, but the porch and floor might work pretty good too.

Well I started scratching and all 3 were disappointing. But that was after 2 days cure (longer on the SW)...
Waiting for a 10 days cure before a detailed write-up. I'm really rooting for that Latex Porch and Floor. Any reason to wait 30 days? Thats the extreme I've seen around the net. I live in LA btw. So while its colder than usual its still very dry.

I'd think after 3-5 days, it'd be a cured as it's going to get. 30 days seems extreme.
