Title: Out of Range?
Post by: said7 on July 18, 2003, 09:28:33 am
Sorry for sounding like a total newb, but i fired up my puter and my WG9100.

Most of the games run fine but when I run certian games the monitor flickers and says "Out of Range" this happens on various games like spy hunter and all the choice 10 games. Is there some kind of setting I overlooked?

I have a ATI 32mb Radeon and a WG9100 using mame .69.

check to see if there is a game-specific INI file that is setting the resolution to one your monitor can't handle.  If there isn't then just create one and specificy
resolution=<whatever is good like 240x200 or something)

Thanks Frost,

Are there any online tutorials for making ini files or some game setting FAQ's ive never done this before.

Does my resolution settings in windows have any effect on this?

Quote

How do i know which resolutions would work?
Im sure there are many others who got the 9100 model, experience any similar problems?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know about the 9100 - you'd have to check what resolutions it natively supports.  (low res arcade? VGA like 9200? etc...)

INI files are handy because Mame reads them in a certain order....here's an example:

(BTW, I'm talking the command line version of mame here.)

So when you start up a game of pacman: "mame.exe pacman"
mame first reads MAME.INI.  Then it will look for a PACMAN.INI in your INI dir.   Whatever options are set in pacman.ini will override mame.ini.

make sure you have the ini dir set in mame.ini.  Check the mame docs (like windows.txt) for more info.

as a temporary solution, someone in another thread suggested changed tien mame.ini file, resolution setting from "auto" to "800x640".  That and "640x480" seemed to help my 9200, maybe it will help yours.  But, I guess its not authentic.  Long term solution seems to be buy an ArcadeVGA.

>>>what<<<

using commandline version of mame, it creates a file called "mame.ini" if you doubleclick on it it will open up in notepad.  scroll down to a setting called "resolution", the default is "auto", I found changing that to "800x600" or "640x480" will eliminate out of range errors.  But, then you don't have original resolutions.  This is all trial and error for me, can't explain why.

thanks,

It says out of range when mame is trying to run a game in a resolution or refresh that your monitor can't do.
A simple way to see what your monitor does and does not like is to temporarily run mame32.  It will let you play with individual game resolutions and refresh rates very easily.  Then when you've worked out what works go back and change the ini's of regular mame.
