Title: The Dell/Sony P1110 is perfect for vertically oriented games

I supplied video gaming to an anime con this weekend, including Pinball Hall Of Fame The Williams Collection on 360 and a few rotating shmups on Dreamcast, mostly Ikaruga and Under Deafeat.

One of the staff members suggested I was crazy, but the P1110 with a Sony Trinitron tube appears to be ideal for this operation.  Structually speaking, the ABS plastic shell is decorative and aesthetic.  Inside is a 1.5mm thick faraday cage that picture tube is enclosed and mounted into.  All parts of the ABS shell are just mounted to shell.  So no worry about weight being carried where it was not meant to be carried.  Obviously a lot of CRT monitors just use the ABS shell for most of the stucture.  To my shock and amazement, the monitor actually tilts back PERFECTLY.  I was expecting to have to prop the monitor up or it'd lean too far back, instead it tilted about 15 degrees and was ideal.

It was funny to see some people confused by the sideways monitor, only to start enjoying the games.  Maybe I should have removed the base though? :D

I ran across one of these the other day and it didn't have a price on it and I didn't have much cash on me. I hated passing it up.

Thrift stores / yard sales...  you can usually find nice CRT monitors on the cheap.  Or your local freecycle...  I've picked up a couple for free for projects of mine.

Yeah, this was at a thrift sale for a fundraiser. They had several 19"-20" monitors that looked great, but none of them had stickers on them. I know they would've been cheap, but wife didn't understand why I needed "yet another" monitor.

I got mine for free.  One was found at the curb.  3 years later it went crazy, like a ghost was mashing the OSD buttons or something, I needed a replacement and found another one locally online for free, paid htat guy $20 to deliver.  By the time he delivered, the first one fixed itself and has been fine ever since.  So I run dual 21" Trinitron monitors on my desktop and with VGA adaptors use them for Dreamcast and Xbox 360 at gaming events.  Also, since they have dual VGA inputs on each, at home, I use the Xbox 360 on one and just flip the input switch as I need it.

HarumaN is right, as usual.  I actually just got this same model monitor for free a couple of months ago off of Craigslist.  It was for a cocktail project I eventually decided to not do.

It's partially de-cased (I kinda butchered the plastics in the process of de-casing it, but I still have both pieces.)  If there are any folks in the NYC/NJ area interested in picking it up, I might be willing to pass it on to a good home.  PM me.
