Title: CPS2?
Post by: TheNewGuy on August 06, 2009, 09:45:31 pm
Hey guys, I spent a long time looking for a version of mame that worked well on my cab, and I thought I had finally found one. Mame .98 seemed to have all the benefits I was getting from fastmame .98, but without the pesky control issues. However, it seems that now I can't play any of the cps2 games. At least I think that's whats going on. Lots of game still work (my neo geo games, other random games) but many do not (marvel vs capcom, darkstalkers, more) so I figured it was a cps2 related problem. Do you guys know what version of mame was finally able to run those games? Do you know if there's a way I can get .98 to run them (hopefully its just a bios file I need)? Thanks for the help guys.

Hey TheNewGuy,

Yes MAME .98 is capable of running CPS2 games.  Here's a link to the bios file "CPZN2"

****no posting files or links to files of bios/roms/chds etc etc****

Thanks a lot dude, that seems to be a really helpful site. Unfortunately, I guess I misdiagnosed the problem. When I try to fun Marvel vs Capcom, I get this error:

mvcu.03d NOT FOUND
mvcu.04d NOT FOUND
mvc.05a NOT FOUND
mvc.06a NOT FOUND
mvcux.03d NOT FOUND
mvcux.04d NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.

Darkstalkers gives:

vamux.03b NOT FOUND
vamux.04b NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.

Am I getting this problem because I am using an older version of mame with a newer romset? Is there a way to roll my romset back, or upgrade the file list in mame .98 without getting a new executable? These aren't cps3 games, right? Thanks again guys.

i may be wrong, but my guess is that you're running new romsets with a version of MAME that's too old for them.

there's no BIOS file required for any CPS games. Mr Dude pointed you to something for the Capcom 3D games (like SF EX).

CPS2 used to use something called "XOR tables" to play... then someone actually properly cracked their encryption and the romsets changed. if you want to stick with .98 you may want to go looking for old ones.

anyone remember when they finished adding major CPS2 titles to MAME? i remember the XOR tables were done one by one, as the people doing them got their hands on more and more boards. so it could be that .98 doesn't have all of them.

Am I allowed to ask where to find old romsets? I know where to find the newest ones, and I think I can find all the way back to 1.07. But where would I go to find .98 roms?

btw, bios's are roms.

please don't post them here.

have you tried to run clrmamepro yet?  They might just be renames which it can fix.  But you have new roms trying to play in old mame version.

now in this i got experience, what you have to do first is to find a place where you can find the mame rollback roms, cant tell you where to get them but you can search for a torrent (if you know what that is) because its a big download , 5gb , once you find that and downlad the whole thing, then you can use clrmamepro to rebuild your romset back to mame98, after that , you will have to rebuild your gamelist if you are using a front end, remeber its [romsite name hint redacted]

oops... :-[

sorry bout the mix up.  These guys are right in the fact that you probably have newer romsets that aren't compatible with the older MAME you are using.  I'm almost positive that MAME .98 has the CPS2 system working complete as I've been running .99 on my cabinet with all of the CPS2 games.

Thanks for the help abispac and lilwolf. I haven't heard of clrmamepro before. I'll look around the internet for a bit and see what comes up.
