Title: AdvanceMame ?
Post by: volcomtwin on July 09, 2003, 03:31:31 pm
Howdy to all...this is a really great place for info, have learned alot already.  Well I am in the process of building my first cab, and plan on using a TV for the monitor.  I would like to use AdvanceMame w/ Mame32 (I think this is possible).  I've been messing around w/ it and it just keeps getting deeper....Are there any nocryptic how-to's on using AdvanceMame? thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated...

If you plan on using a Windows OS for MAME32 I would probably recommend a different front-end.

Is there a reason you prefer MAME32 over regular MAME?

I'm just lazy and only feel like running windows..I am running other emulators also (NES, SNES, GBA, Sega).  I've just heard that AdvanceMame is the way to go for TVs..

Ok, first of all:

Mame32 is mame for windows with it's own built in front end GUI for selecting the games.

AdvanceMame is a tweaked/custom build of mame with lot's of expanded video options (others as well).

Mame (command line version) is a windows build that is made to use with Windows and the Front End of your choice.

DosMame is for use in pure DOS or Windows with dos like Win98 or earlier.

When you say you want to use AdvanceMame with Mame32 you are saying you want to use two builds of mame?  Are you talking about AdvanceMenu (the AdvanceMame Frontend)?

Not trying to pick on you....just trying to clarify things.  You can run the windows command line version of mame with any of the front ends out there in windows....don't think Mame32 is the only option for windows. Mame32 is great because it is simple, but it's not your only choice....

Good Luck.

I think AdvanceMenu is what I was reading about. So what your saying is that I can run any FEs in win98 ms-dos?  Oh gawd I feel like the dumb retard of the board ......

Don't feel dumb, we all start out as "n00bies"....

You have to check, but the FrontEnd will state if it is for DOS or Windows.  Then, depending on your OS, you can run DosMAME or the commandline windows mame (which is the main download at mame.net).

For example, on my cab I'm running Win98.  I'm currently using EmuLoader frontend pointed to the windows command line version of Mame.

OT:  How I wish they would change the name of MAME32 to something like MAMEGUI or QUICKMAME (setup wise it's 'quick') or something - obviously no offense intended to anyone that uses it.  I just think it confuses many people unnecessarily, me included way back when.

It used to make sense, back when "official mame" meant 16-bit "dos mame" and mame32 was the only mame for windows.  Now that the official mame is (win32 API) "windows mame", mame32 sure isn't the best name.

And this isn't the first time "mame32" wasn't very good.  MameDev skipped version 0.32, jumping from the 0.31 to 0.33, just to avoid confusion between "mame ver. 0.32" and mame32 any version.

On the other hand, while it might be easier if mame32 had a different name, a large part of the noobie confusion is based on (win) mame's command line centric design, when MS and apple has brain washed people to think "modern OS" and "windows" means mouse-only UI.   I'm not sure how much a name change will help.
