Title: Spy Hunter playing blind MONITOR IS BAD. SELLER IS FIXING IT,,,THANK YOU TO ALL.
Post by: Patrick Mc on June 14, 2009, 10:27:32 pm
Hello All,
I have been reading a lot of the post to figure this out but did not get exactly what I need.  So here goes.
- Skill level, amateur.  Ok knowledge of electronics, I can discharge a tube without killing myself and others! And I have done a successful monitor replacement. I have a weller soldering station and I am not afraid to use it. I have re-wired an airplane.....that should do it.
- Replaced the monitor in the Spy Hunter about 6 months ago.  Worked great. (unknown brand, pic included).
- Last night, turned it one to clean it up for sale and it started playing blind, (takes credit and plays).
- There  is voltage (124VAC) getting all the way to the board.  I do not know how to tweek the Voltage up a little as posted in other discussions.  - There is no glow, no screen even with the room darkened and no arc when I discharge at the anode.
- Do I have a bad flyback?  is this possible on a new monitor?

Other Q's and info.
The SW that takes you from test to play mode has always given me trouble.  Always thought it was the SW.  I was in there prior to powering up to test the SW.  Seemed to work fine.  I cut the wires to place another SW in anyway.  I powered up to test the wires prior to installing new SW when I noticed to screen.

-Could my problem be in the PCB not sending a SIG?  I know that sound a little stupid considering the tube does not power up at all.  Just thought that maybe the PCB told the monitor board to power up and it was not doing that for some reason.
- Why is there VAC going to the monitor board even when the game is switched off?  This seemed odd.

Hooked SH up to the monitor in my Track and Field and got a picture.  Not a great picture, it was hard to adjust in.  Tried the SP monitor plugged into the T&F and nothing.  I am guessing problem lies in the monitor.

Anybody???

Any onboard fuses on that new monitor?

Like Kevin Mullins said, check fuses.  Usually at least one right next to the AC input.

Get things good and quiet in the room and listen for a faint "ticking" sound.

The only fuse in there is good.  No faint ticking noise.

Know the model of this "dead" monitor (or, even better, do you have a schematic/service manual)?

Looks like there's some text on the main PCB in the bottom right corner of your pic, but I can't quite read.  MTG-2904?
I have a MTG-2902, but it doesn't look like that.

That does indeed look like one of them Happ/Vision Pro models.
I've only messed with one of those....and honestly I wasn't impressed.

MTG-2901, now that you say it, i remember the box and it is a Happ/vision.  Could it have gone bad already?

It's a "29" 01 ??
Would think a Spy Hunter would use a "19" 01.

29 being a 29" and 19 being a 19".

That is what was written on it.  Anyway, the company that sold it to me determined that it was the monitor and they are going to fix it.
Thank you for all the help.

Yeah, I could kinda make it out in your picture..... just threw me off a bit.

Anyway, the company that sold it to me determined that it was the monitor and they are going to fix it.

Awesome !!  And you didn't have to beg or anything either?!?
Still, come back and let us know what they find. (if they repair it)

He said that he did not have time to investigate so he just replaced the board.
BAD news is that I hooked it up and the color in the bottom right portion is washed out.  Very noticeable.  I could not adjust it out.  WTF do I do now?  It was not like that before.  I can't sell this machine like this. #%*!@ Qbert.

Does it act as if it is degaussing properly.

The ONE experience I had with a Happs/Vision Pro...... that was my major complaint. Even though it "degaussed" it wasn't ever enough. I had to manually degauss it with a wand every time it got moved.

Kevin,
I feel like that last reply was outsourced to India...because I did not understand a word of it.  Please explain.

Kevin,
Does this have anything to do with what happens when you put a magnet up to a tube TV?  I know that might sound stupid but your post got me thinking and that is what it looks like.

Sounds like your lacking some "boingshizzle".   :laugh2:

After the monitor has been off for awhile....when you FIRST turn it on it should make a very quick and brief um.... "thwang" sound.

Really seems noticeable on PC crt monitors when they first get turned on.
When the screen gets all wonky colored for just a second or two.
So if you can visualize that....then that's similar to what your arcade monitor should do.
Just may not be as noticeable.

If you turn your machine one way or the other, the color splotch should move. This will tell you for certain it is a degauss issue of sorts.

Yes, it's all magnetism related in some way or another.

Do you have any speakers or anything TOO close to the monitor?
If they are in the factory positions, then they shouldn't be a problem.

nothing magnetic near it.  although might have been while it was in his shop.  It did sit next to my pressure washer on the hour long drive home. ?!?!
Shall I take a picture?

will correct it self with time or do I have to do something to it?

If ya get a chance snap a picture..... just to verify we're talking about the same thing.
But I'm pretty sure it's a degauss issue.

Let it sit awhile, say a half hour, and then fire it up and see if it changes.
(if ya hadn't already tried that that is)

Kevin,
I turned it on tonight and when I placed my cordless drill in front of the monitor the color came up awesome.  Here is a pic. it is subtle and in the lower right corner.  How do I fix this?  Is it fixable?

Honestly I have seen some get to the point where you have to strategically place SMALL magnets on the monitor frame somewhere if spots like that just absolutely refuse to go away.

It takes some experimenting though....... and start with SMALL magnets.

But I recommend experimenting with the degauss techniques first of course.
Like the drill method, but normally it's an AC corded drill of sorts.
Try different circular motions while pulling away from the screen, etc.

For all intent and purposes this is a new monitor.  Should I have to accept this?

Me personally..... I wouldn't.

Like I mentioned before, the ONE time I messed with one of those for someone it was also NEW and it never would degauss properly.

Now whether you can work it out with the seller or not..... can't say.

Kevin, help.

Spy hunter monitor is up and working but the color is not right.  Did all the "net" degaussing techniques and it improved but not good enough.  I took the monitor out of the cab to do it slower and more precise and it was perfect on my table.  Perfect color.  I looked in the cab for anything foreign and did not find anything.  I put the monitor back in and color in the same spot goes to crap....take it out looks awesome.  Buyer will be here in the morning and he already cancelled one trip to come.  Please help late tonight if you can, need to get this thing done!.

Re-orient the cabinet (as in turn it 90 degrees).  Sometimes the earth's magnetic field can cause issues.

Check for speakers in the cabinet that are unshielded.

Be careful with tools used to install the monitor.  Magnetized tools such as screwdrivers or power drills can cause problems.

Perhaps the monitor mounts within the cabinet have become magnetized by some means.

I thought that might be the case when I took the thing in and out 6 times last night.  The last time seemed to do it though.  There is still a little distortion but I left it alone.  Is there a way to de-magnetize the cab or the mounts?

The metal mount on the one side of the cab was magnetized causing the problem.
