PC? Serial? USB? DC?

it could probably use another button or so unless it's a 6 button serial joystick.

Small sticks can be nice and more portable... cool...

hm...
You're building a ton of these things for people...
What do you conect all the controls with?
PS2 Hack, Keyboard hack, other encoder, etc???
I've got a few friends interested in a little control box like that
but I'm not sure what the best/easiest control to hack would be.

Thus far, I've only hacked a keyboard & that was easy enough for me.
Just takes a couple of hours to solder/wire/map the matrix/ & figure out the
best keys for it.

But I know this is 10 times more than I would need for, say a sidewinder.

What's the best control to hack?

That is actually a redoctane controller with added artwork. He may have replaced the controls with higher quality stuff, but it comes built for playstation. It would only be a matter of extending the leads for use with different controls. Otherwise, he may even be using the same controls the came with it.

Either way, it was born as a Playstation controller. I think redoctane sells them on their website for like $30 or something cheap like that.

No they aren't pre-made redoctane boxes. But didn't you mention to me that you were going to do that?

Redoctane now actually sells their boxes as a DIY kit. You put in your own stuff for. It's only $20 and $20 new with the PSOne PCB w/ crappy controls.

If anyone wants a DIY box, you should check it out.

I dunno about other people... but Im a Mutt.  Genetically speaking that means I have three or more ethnic backgrounds, so why Pick one when i could just call myself a mutt.  Scots-Irish, German, Native American, Welsh... does it really matter?
Title: Re:MORE ! EVEN MOOORE ! !

Not to throw myself into the center of a pitched conflict, but he was almost certainly intending to refer to Japanese, as is Nationals of Japan.  In that context, his comments are almost as horrific as calling canadians Canucks. Personally, I've always found the "Jap" family of ETHNIC slurs particularly offensive because they're generally applied cross-culturally. I.E. Everyone from that entire region ends up becoming a "Jap." Had he said something more like this, I'm sure the entire world would've recoiled in rage. But he didn't. At least it's a good thing he doesn't still think of Japan as Nippon, righ?

Title: Re:MORE ! EVEN MOOORE ! !
Post by: Amra on August 01, 2003, 11:41:50 pm
I didnt call them that, I dont believe in ethnicity, I only believe in nationality.  For example, in America, we have Asians, Africans, Europeans, Middle Eastern, Australian, the list is almost endless... but they segregate themselves, because as far as Im concerned, they are all just Americans, and if they take offence to some racial slur, then it does nothing but show their insecurity with being the person they are.  I dont call people Japs, Gooks, ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- or Spics that is archaic.  It doesnt define who they are, it is simply a stereotypical association that people made a long time ago.

If I call you American, would you be pissed because you are ethnically "Native American" or "African American" or even "Asian American"... if you do then it is you who have the problem, not me.

The sooner people stop putting labels on themselves, the better.

Oh, and I wasnt calling anyone a gook, I was simply giving another example of things that Japanese find offensive, so that people dont use it.

And I must still be living in the past, because I thought all the Islands east of Asia were in the Nippon Monarchy... Ah well... :\

Okay, so let me get this straight.  You make these one player USB control panels for people.  They certainly look pretty.  My question is this: how do you use it?  Do you put it on a desk and play?  On the floor?  I know when I play fighting games, I like my arms to be straight.  Show me a pic of you playing a game with one of these.

no, he uses hacked psone pads. i used them in a cp i built for a friend and they work really well on ps and dc. there pretty straightforward to hack, and you can get a start and select, plus 8 buttons and a d-pad. really cool to use for a multi-console pad.

Hey SNAAAKE...
I really would like to see a pic of the insides onf one of these...
Do you hinge the top, or just screw it down?
Do you use a terminal strip, or just wire PS points directly to the buttons?
It's definately looking like you're the local "expert" on stand alone PS control boxes.

Another Question... Do the PS controllers work with PS2???
I don't have either, but I have a few friends with PS2s.

Also, have you ever tried to hack the analogs into a CP???
Just curious...

Yes will take a pic when I wire em up tonight.
No hings.just tacks.
No terminal strip(waste of money).
I use digital pads and works with ps2 as well.

Never hacked analog.

all psx pads will work with ps2s, its the same pin input.  The one hacked psx analog job that sticks out in my mind is M3talslug's work with his 2 player control panel.  http://tobywong.50megs.com/   Very nice artwork, two ikari warriors joysticks hacked to analog psx controllers, and works with Druin's interface, and the joysticks are hooked up to the d-pad plus an i-pac.  Very very nice composition on the entire box as well.
btw, snaaaake, dont tell me that stick was for GoukiGirl... damn she's annoying, looks like your enterprise is growing though.

Not trying to be annoying (But I'm sure I am... ::))
PS controllers have 4 main buttons & 4 "top" buttons (L1,L2,R1,R2)...
What layout are you using for your 6 buttons?

Maybe since I don't have a PS2 I'm missing something, but it seams like
you'd be leaving out some critical functions if you left out buttons.
(Or at least make it really hard to play some games...)

Then again, the only games I've played on PS2 are the FPSers like Nightfire & Splinter type games.
These controllers would seem to be useless with these games (no analog)...

What games are played with these controllers most? (I'm assuming mostly Fighting games, but I'm really curious).

Again, sorry for the "20 questions", these are just things I've pondered & have yet to figure out.
Thanks!

None of the fighters or shmups on PS, XBox, GC use more than 6 buttons.

Some people seem to want to play FPS and other things on their arcade cabinets.. but that just silly. It's the completely wrong interface.

Most fighters use 6 buttons.
I am leaving out L2 and R2.
you dont use a joystick to play splinter cell...duh ::)

these are ONLY for fighters...like marvel vs capcom 2.

I'm Irish and you can call me whatever you like.

The Magneto artwork came out nicely. Nice work Snaaake.

You know what, I have lots of friends from that area (all over) and I don't think they'd be nearly as easy to offend as that.  They toss around all kinds of racial crap, sometimes even seem to enjoy their stereotypes.  One of 'em made up a rap about white rice.  They all know people won't really assume anything about them on a personal level based on that stuff.

"Japs" is what we called them when we were trying our best to kill them in WWII.  That's why it's derogatory.  But, I don't think whoever posted that was thinking along those lines at all.  Just a coincidence people!

Besides, an invention called the "transistor" wouldn't have gotten off the ground if one of their teams hadn't picked it up and figured out a way to use it commercially.  The company that did invented the transistor radio, and was called Sony.  Ain't nobody here gonna honestly diss the Japanese for thinking outside the box!

I believe he has a piece of lexan / plexi on top... so, no need to glue the artwork.....

when will you open an international custom stick company ??.... remember to give me some options....
